Heisman Watch (Week 1)

1. Landry Jones QB Oklahoma
Last Week: 375 yards 1 TD Next Week: Bye
Comments: It was easy pickens for Jones this past weekend. He had no trouble picking apart the Tulsa defense in route to 375 yards through the air. He only threw for one touchdown, but he'll have plenty more chances over the course of the season to improve on that mark. Next week the Sooners will be off, but they'll be getting ready for Florida State in week 3. That showdown will be a great opportunity for Jones to make an big impression on Heisman voters.

2. Andrew Luck QB Stanford
Last Week: 171 yards passing 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD Next Week: @Duke
Comments: It wasn't a great statistical day for Luck, but when your blowing out a WAC school your not really going to play too deep into the 2nd half. Luck got the job done. He was very efficient throwing 17-26 for 171 yards and two TD throws. He also ran another one in for good measures. Next week Luck and the Cardinal will travel to Duke where he should have another opportunity to put up some numbers in a blow out win. It will be week 3 where he gets his first tough match up against Arizona. But the season will all come down to their match up against conference rival Oregon.

3. Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State
Last Week: 144 yards 0 TD Next Week: vs Arizona
Comments: Last season Blackmon scored a touchdown in every game that he played in. In his first game this season he went TDless. Hold off on sounding the alarms, he'll be fine. He'll get plenty of opportunities to find the endzone throughout the season.Blackmon is such a dominant receiver that no matter how many defenders focus their attention to him, he'll produce. Next week the Cowboys face off against Arizona on Thursday night. That will be a great opportunity for Heisman voters to see him on a national stage where he can grab their attention.

4. Kellen Moore QB Boise State
Last Week: 261 yards 3 TDs 1 INT Next Week: @Toledo
Comments: I'll say the same thing that I said last year. For Kellen Moore to win the Heisman Trophy he is going to need to lead the Broncos to a undefeated record and be in contention for a National Title game. Boise State's win against Georgia is a great first step towards this process. He threw for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 14 point victory. The win and performance by Moore has the nation talking. However Boise's schedule is pretty weak with only TCU being the toughest game left. And after their loss to Baylor everybody knows that they aren't the team they have been.

5. Trent Richardson RB Alabama
Last Week: 37 yards 3 TDs Next Week: @Penn State
Comments: Richardson is a lot of people's preseason Heisman favorite and he did score 3 touchdowns, but only rushed for 37 yards on 13 carries. Not the stats you would assume he'd get in a route of Kent State, but when the defense loads up the box to stop the run and make a new QB beat them its understandable. Richardson will have next week's match up at Penn State to show a national audience what he is really made of. Look for Richardson to bounce back from this low yardage to torch the Nittny Lions in a Alabama win.

6. LeMichael James RB Oregon
Last Week: 54 yards 1 TD Next Week: vs Nevada
Comments: Not a great first game for the 2011 Heisman finalist. He did rush for 54 yards and an early touchdown. But an injury really limited his effectiveness and forced the Ducks to play a true freshman at RB. I wouldn't panic if I were James or Ducks fans. LeMichael James and the Ducks will bounce back from this loss and have a great shot to run the table. Stanford and USC are the only two teams that they could run into trouble with. Next week James should be able to put up huge numbers against a Nevada team that could struggle this year.

Keep an eye on
Daniel Thomas QB Oregon
In the loss against LSU Thomas threw for 240 yards with a TD and an INT. If the Ducks can bounce back from this loss and run the table, Thomas should be right back in the hunt for the Heisman Trophy.

Robert Griffen QB Baylor
RG3 was well known by the Big 12 schools, but an impressive showing in an upset win againstTCU really showed the national how good he is. I'm not ready to go all in on him yet, but 359 yards and 5 touchdowns is a pretty good way to start of the season.

David Wilson RB Virginia Tech
Wilson isn't well known by many, but you'll get to know him this year. The speedster isbenefiting from Darren Evans and Ryan Williams leaving for the NFL and now that he is the man he showed on Saturday. He rushed for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Hokies in a win against Appalachian State. The Hokies have a very easy schedule and have a great shot at running the table. If they do that, Wilson could get a ton of exposure.

Robert Woods WR USC
The Trojans didn't have an impressive win, but Woods really got a lot of attention in the game. Woods set the USC record for catches in a game with 17 and added 177 yards and 3 touchdowns. Woods is extremely talented and should get plenty of opportunities to show off his talents this year.

Geno Smith QB West Virginia
Despite playing in a shortend game, Geno Smith was able to put up big numbers in a route of rival Marshall. Smith threw for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith looked very comfortable playing in Dana Holgerson's spread offense and he'll get plenty of opportunities to put up big numbers throughout the season. If the Mountaineers can win the conference and get some big wins throughout the season he could have a shot at making an appearance in New York City.

Fixing the Big 12

With the recent news that Texas A&M making their intentions clear that they are exploring leaving the Big 12. That basically means that they are gone. That would leave the Big 12 with only 9 teams. That wouldn't be awful. They would still have Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri. Those four teams could carry a conference. But it would probably be a wise decision to look towards getting back to 12 teams with a the idea of having a championship game. SMU came out this week saying that wanted to be in the Big 12 if they were looking. That got me thinking. If I was in charge of the Big 12 (heck anybody could be better than Dan Beebe) which teams would I go after?

The teams I would be looking for don't necessarily have to fit geographically. That would be nice, but if you want the Big 12 to grow you need to get more eyes on your product. Notre Dame would obviously be my first choice, but there is no way they join. They want to stay Independent (and why wouldn't they) and if they were forced to join a conference it would probably be the Big 10. So with all that said, here is a look at the teams I would make invitations to.

Boise State Broncos. This would be one of my first choices. Boise isn't a big market, but they are nationally known and would bring a championship contender in. Their facilities are improving and they have a rabid fan base. Plus everybody would be wanting to see if they could make it playing in a big boys league.

TCU Horned Frogs. Along with Boise State this would be one of the first schools I'd target. TCU and Boise State are the top two non BCS teams out there. Plus TCU fits geographically and gives the conference a team in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex which is the #5 media market. Now I am aware that having Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech already gives you Dallas, but having TCU could help even more. I know that TCU has already joined the Big East for the 2012 season, but they would jump at the opportunity to get into the Big 12 where they wouldn't have to travel as much.

San Diego State Aztecs. Now San Diego State doesn't fit geographically, but they are a team that has the potential to make a big time jump. The team has improved under Brady Hoke and now Rocky Long should keep them on that path. Add in that their attendance has been improving lately which shows the interest. But what is most important is having a presence in Southern California. You would get the San Diego market (#28) plus having games in California could help teams recruit the area better.

Central Florida Knights. Much like San Diego State, Central Florida doesn't fit geographically but they are a team that is getting better and better and ready to start making a run at a BCS Bowl. UCF has also put a lot of money into improving their facilities. But what makes this move even better is that it gives you the Orlando market (#19) and a presence in the fertile recruiting grounds of Florida.

Houston Cougars. Here is another team that has had the ability to challenge for a possible BCS berth. Houston under Art Briles and now Kevin Sumlin have had the Cougars as regulars in the Conference USA Title hunt. Put them into the Big 12 and they might not challenge for the conference title right away, but they have proven that they could beat the likes of Texas Tech on a consistent basis. Add in that the Houston market is #10 nationally and they wouldn't require the current teams to travel much. Plus they are another team that has started investing a lot of money into their facilities.

If those teams don't work, here are some fall back options.

BYU Cougars. BYU thought that they would be a perfect fit when the Pac 10 wanted to expand, but they were passed over for Utah. So instead they decided to go Independent. But don't think for a second they wouldn't pass up the chance to join a BCS conference if they were invited. Now BYU is known for being difficult to work with, but they would give you a reputable program and because of the BYUTV network gives you eyes all over the country and some parts of the world. They wouldn't be my first choice but they would be an interesting fall back option.

SMU Mustangs. They have made it very clear that they want in, but they should be the ultimate fall back option. Now SMU has improved under June Jones, but they are no where ready to be competing in the Big 12 conference. The only thing they would bring to the conference is that they fit geographically and gives the Dallas market. But having Texas in the conference probably gives the conference the same amount of the Dallas market as SMU would. The only way I would invite them is if I had to invite somebody and nobody else accepted.

Overall if the Big 12 was able to get Boise State, TCU and either Central Florida or San Diego State they could be set up for a while. Heck even if TCU doesn't come and its just Boise State, Central Florida and San Diego State that would make them even more attractive and a better conference. But that's just my opinion. Let me know yours.

Mountain West Predictions

1. Boise State Broncos, 12-0 (7-0)
Even though they are moving into a tougher conference, the Boise State Broncos should find themselves as conference champions again. On offense they do loose their top two receivers in Austin Pettis and Titus Young, but 4 year starting QB Kellen Moore is the key to the offense and they should miss a beat. Defensively they return seven starters and should be solid in all three levels. If Boise State can get by Georgia in the opener and TCU at home they should have no problem running the table.

2. TCU Horned Frogs, 9-3 (6-1)
Under Gary Patterson the Horned Frogs have turned themselves into one of the primer non-BCS teams in all of college football. This year shouldn't be any different. Just like every other year their defense will be ranked in the top 5 nationally. They are lead by LB Tank Carder who is all over the field. However offensively they could have some struggles. Gone are Andy Dalton and Jeremy Kerley who were so crucial to their success. Casey Pachall will take over for Dalton at QB and he does have experience. But its going to be hard to replicate Dalton's success. Look for the Horned Frogs to be good this year, but they won't be challenging for any BCS games.

3. Air Force Falcons, 9-3 (5-2)
Troy Calhoun is one of the best coaches in the country and the problem is a lot of people don't really know that. This year the Falcons return 14 starters and should challenge for a top spot in the conference. A big game to watch is when TCU comes to Colorado Springs 2nd week of the season. They could catch the Horned Frogs still transitioning on offense and take a win. If they do that they could be in place to challenge Boise State for the conference title. If not they'll be right back in 3rd place in the conference.

4. San Diego State Aztecs, 8-4 (4-3)
In only two years Brady Hoke turned San Diego State around and had them pointed in the right direction. However Brady Hoke is the new HC at Michigan. Rocky Long who was the DC is now the HC. He is very familiar with the Mountain West when he had some success as the HC at New Mexico. SDSU is lead on offense by talented QB Ryan Lindley. He has to find some new targets on offense, but much like Kellen Moore at Boise State he'll be fine. However they have to replace a lot of starters on defense and could run into some issues there. But if Long can keep SDSU on the upswing, this could be a sleeping giant in my opinion.

5. Colorado State Rams, 7-5 (3-4)
After three mediorce seasons, HC Steve Fairchild has to be on the hot seat. After going 7-6 in his first season he has had two 3-9 seasons in a row. However this might be Fairchild's best team yet. They return 14 starters and for the first time in Fairchild's tenure a returning quarterback in Pete Thomas. The Rams also get both Air Force and San Diego State at home, so if they can pull off wins against those two teams they could have their best season in a while.

6. Wyoming Cowboys, 5-7 (2-5)
When former Missouri OC Dave Christensen was hired I thought it was a great move. His high octane spread offense could do wonders for the Cowboys. He took them to the New Mexico Bowl in his first season, but they fell back to a 3-9 record last year. But they were a lot better than their record indicated. This year they return 14 starters and have some of the best defenders back. But they will probably be starting a true freshman at quarterback and that alone could cause them struggle. Once Christensen can get a quality quarterback in they could really take off. But until then I don't see them improving much.

7. UNLV Rebels, 4-8 (1-6)
I did like the hiring of Bobby Hauck who was very successful while the HC at Montana. However the UNLV team he inherited is short on talent that won only 2 games last year. This year they should improve their overall record, but fall back in conference play. Last year they were able to beat both New Mexico and Wyoming, but this year they have to face both of those teams on the road. Look for the Rebels to endure another long season.

8. New Mexico Lobos, 2-10 (0-7)
Being a highly regarded recruiter and a good offensive mind would think that he'd have better success than they have. But this year is the crucial year for the Lobos. They return 15 starters including 9 on defense. Add in some highly regarded transfers and they could have some improved success. However don't expect much. New Mexico will be looking for a new coach for the 2012 season.

I just don't understand....Texas A&M to the SEC

Over the past couple of months one of the biggest stories in college football has been Texas A&M's desire to leave the Big 12 and enter the SEC. Now on the surface it seems like it would be a great fit. A&M would escape Texas' shadow and the SEC would have a presence in Texas. However when I look at this, I don't understand why this would be a perfect fit for both parties.

For the SEC it is. They would expand into Texas where there are 25 million more eyes on their product. Add in that they'll add one to three more teams to the conference and when they go to CBS and ESPN to negotiate their TV deal they'll pull a much bigger amount of money than they are currently getting. Another benefit for the SEC is that they'll have an even bigger access to the fertile recruiting grounds that Texas has to offer. With a team in the state, coaches will be able to go into there and tell the players that they'll get to play a game in their home state. This will make an already strong SEC, even better.

But for Texas A&M, going to the SEC doesn't make sense to me. Yes A&M will be getting away from Texas, who they feel is controlling the league. Yes they would be entering the premier college football conference in the nation. Yes they'll be going to a conference that is more stable. However, does anybody honestly think that they'll compete for championships in the SEC? When was the last time A&M contended for a Big 12 Title? Sure last year they only lost 2 conference games, but they haven't been to a single Big 12 Championship game in the past 12 years. If they stay in the Big 12 they get annual match ups against the likes of Kansas, KState, Iowa State, Baylor, and Texas Tech. Realistically they have to just beat Oklahoma or Texas. In the SEC only Mississippi, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky could be considered push overs. And they have to go up against Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia. They extra money they'd get from the SEC would be nice, but is it that much better than winning? Look at Oklahoma. They are one of the top college football programs in the country. But yet they haven't been going out and looking to leave the Big 12. That's because they get it. They know that all they have to do is win the Big 12 Conference and they'll have their shot at winning the National Title. Yeah they don't make SEC type of money, but because they are consistently playing for championships they get more exposure. You'd think you would see A&M have the same mindset. But I guess that hatred/jealously for Texas is just too strong.

But A&M has their mind already made up. Once they get the invite they'll be gone. They've already gone through the steps to make it happen. I just believe they'll be making a move that will set their program back significantly.

Big East Predictions

1. West Virginia Mountaineers, 8-4 (5-2)
This has definitely been an interesting off season in Morgantown. It all started with Dana Holgerson being named coach in waiting and Bill Stewart being told that this would be his last season. However an unhappy Stewart tried to sabotage Holgerson and ended up being fired. Now Holgerson is the HC and he'll bring his high octane spread offense to rejuvenate an offense that hasn't been the same since Rich Rod left. Holgerson has very talented QB Geno Smith who could be the best QB Holgerson has ever coached. If Smith can continue his development the Mountaineers will be a force to be reckon with.

2. Pittsburgh Panthers, 8-4 (5-2)
A lot of teams change coaches in the off-season, but how many of them have to hire two? After Dave Wannstedt was fired Pitt thought they had their man in Mike Haywood. Haywood was able to turn around Miami (OH) and turn them into MAC Champions. However right after being hired, Hayweeod was arrested for domestic abuse and then fired. Now enter Todd Graham. The good thing for Graham is the cupboard isn't bare. He is inheriting a team with a lot of talent and that has challenged for the Big East Title the past few years. QB Tino Sunseri returns after an impressive freshman year and will lead Graham's wide open offensive attack. ON defense the Panthers will be moving to the 3-4 and they have the best defensive player in the Big East in Brandon Lindsey. Lindsey is a dynamic pass rusher who had 10 sacks last year. With him moving to the rush linebacker spot look for the Panthers to try and take advantage of moving him around. Overall the Panthes are in a good spot. They have a lot of talent, and a fresh new face in charge, and a schedule that is manageable. If they can knock of West Virginia they have a great shot at winning their first conference championship and making it to a BCS Bowl since the Fiesta Bowl in 2004.

3. South Florida Bulls, 7-5 (4-3)
South Florida is a program that has the potential to really be a player in the Big East. They alsways have good player and are in a fertile recruiting grounds, but they usually struggle to put it all together. QB BJ Daniels is a good player, but is very inconsistent and makes some poor decisions. If the offense is going to be successful this season they are going to tneed an improved Daniels. Their secondary is the strength of the defense and if they can get some young players to step up and provide depth along the line and at linebacker they could have the best defense in the conference. Overall South Florida has some talent, but its a work in progress. But HC Skip Holtz is a good coach and he has them pointed in the right direction.

4. UConn Huskies, 7-5 (4-3)
Under Randy Edsall the Huskies were turned around from Big East doormat to conference champions last year. However a blow out loss against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl showed how far the Huskies still have to go. But then this off season Edsall shocked many by leaving UConn for Maryland. Many didn't think he'd be around forever, but you'd think could have left for a better school. But what Edsall saw was that the writing was on the wall. UConn loses a lot of talent and is going to be taking a few steps back. This was his chance to get out while he was at his highest. In his place is Paul Pasqualoni who had some good success while at Syracuse. Pasqualoni has a lot of connections in the Northeast and he is knowing for being able to keep talented players to stay in the area. This year may be tough for him, but UConn many not be down for too long.

5. Cincinnati Bearcats, 7-5 (4-3)
Two years ago Cincinnati finished the regular season undefeated and faced off against Florida in the Sugar Bowl (where they got distroyed). After that season, HC Brian Kelly bolted for Notre Dame and Cincinnati hired Butch Davis (who replaced Kelly at Central Michigan) to replace him. But instead of keeping the momentum going like he did at CMU, the Bearcats won only five games the next season. The Bearcats have some talented skills players but their offensive line is razor thin and that could lead to some problems. On defense they ahve talent but they really struggled last year, giving up the most points in the Big East last year. If they can develop some talent or figure out now to slow some teams down, they could really improve. Otherwise it could be another long season in the post Brian Kelly era.

6. Rutgers Scarlett Knights, 7-5 (3-4)
From 2005-2007 the Scarlett Knights were one of the best teams in the conference and HC Greg Schiano was the hottest coach in college football. But once Ray Rice and Kenny Britt left twon they haven't been the same. Last year they were off to a 4-2 record and then lost their final six games. That stretch of games just so happened to be right after defensive lineman Eric LeGrand was paralyzed during the Army game covering a kick off. I'd have to believe that his injury had something to do with their skid. One could only imagine what his teammates must have had on their minds. For this season the Knights have a favorable non-conference season which should get them at least four wins. If they can bounce back and win some games in conference they could find themselves back in the hunt for the conference title.

7. Louisville Cardinals, 4-8 (2-5)
Oh what a few years can do. Back in 2006 Louisville was one loss away from an undefeated season. But Bobby Petrino left for the Atlanta Falcons and Steve Kragthorpe from Tulsa was brought in. Kragthorpe was highly regarded, but just flopped at Louisville. Now Charlie Strong is trying to remold the Cardinals into his version of what Florida was like when he was there under Urban Meyer. Last year the Cardinals finished the season at 7-6 and despite the average record they were competitive. They lost 5 games by a touchdown or less. Now Louisville will be better, but they still have a ways to go to compete for a conference championship. They'll more than likely start a true freshman at quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater. He is very talented, but will make some dumb freshman mistakes. Louisville has a relatively easy non conference schedule, so if they can get past Kentucky and turn a few of those losses from last year into wins they could have a much better season. But that will be difficult to do with a true freshman at QB.

8. Syracuse Orangemen, 4-8 (1-6)
Doug Marrone is a good coach and has improved the Syracuse program, but they are in for a long road this year. Last year they won 8 games which is nothing short of amazing. However, they have to replace the talented Delone Carter at RB who is now with the Indianapolis Colts. Add in that the injury bug has hit the team and that will make things tough. But the lack of talent at some key positions are going to force them to pay a lot of young players. That is not a recipe for success. Add in that their schedule doesn't do them any favors and that will lead to them being at the bottom of the conference again.

ACC Predictions

Atlantic
1. Florida State Seminoles, 10-2 (7-1)
Armed with a bunch of young talent and an favorable schedule the Seminoles have a great chance to make it back to a BCS Bowl for the first time since 2005. Athletic QB EJ Manuel takes over at quarterback. Manuel played well in relief of 1st round pick Christian Ponder when he was missed games last year. On defense Brandon Jenkins is a very dynamic pass rusher who will contend for defensive player of the year honors.

2. Clemson Tigers, 7-5 (5-3)
Clemson is one of those teams that is always a constant underachiever. Despite having a talented roster they are always coming up short. This year shouldn't be too different as they have to replace both Jarvis Jenkins and DaQuan Bowers. However on offense the Tigers have to replace veteran starter Kyle Parker (who left to play baseball for the Rockies) with sophomore Tajh Boyd. Boyd is very talented, but also very raw. He has some talent around him, but if he struggles to take control the offense could be in for a long season.

3. Maryland Terrapins, 7-5 (5-3)
A lot of people where thinking Mike Leach might end up in College Park as the replacement from Ralph Friedgen, but instead they got Randy Edsall from UConn which ended up being a very good choice too. Edsall turned UConn into a Big East Champion which is a very hard job to do. Edsall is a very good coach who is good at finding diamonds in the rough and developing them. If he can keep the talent from the Washington DC area he could very good things at Maryland. As for this year he'll be aided by talented QB Danny O'Brien who is one of the top QBs in the conference and safety turned linebacker Kenny Tate.

4. Boston College Eagles, 6-6 (4-4)
This is not a bad Boston College team, but their schedule is brutal. They got the short end of the stick and have both VaTech and Miami on the road. However BC does have one of the best defenses in the ACC which will give them a shot in every game. Montrell Harris is a top flight running back, but uncertainty at QB will be their downfall.

5. North Carolina State Wolfpack, 6-6 (4-4)
NC State enjoyed 9-4 season last year and were poised to improve on it with returning QB Russell Sheppard coming back for his senior season. However HC Tom O'Brien decided he was finally done with Sheppard going back and forth between baseball and the football team. O'Brien basically kicked Sheppard off the team in favor of Mike Glennon who he has compared to Matt Ryan. O'Brien better be right, because if Glennon stinks up the joint and Sheppard leads Wisconsin to the Big 10 title. There are going to be some unhappy people in Raleigh.

6. Wake Forrest Demon Deacons, 3-9 (1-7)
In 2006 Wake Forrest shocked many by winning the ACC Title and playing in a BCS Bowl game but ever since that game their have slowly been going down hill. It looked like Wake was going to be a yearly player in the ACC, but as the years pass its more like those years were just a flash in the pan. This year shouldn't be too different. They do return 17 starters, but they got a tough ACC schedule which won't help out.

Coastal
1. Virginia Tech Hokies, 10-2 (6-2)
Under Frank Beamer the Hokies have been a mainstay a top the ACC. This year should be no different. Logan Thomas and David Wilson will be the leaders of the offense and help replace the production of Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Williams. But we all know that the Hokies are lead by their defense and special teams. Bud Foster has another solid defense that should allow Virginia Tech to take home another Coastal Division Title.

2. Miami Hurricanes, 9-3 (5-3)
With the recent news that Hurricane players accepted illegal gifts and services that could affect some players eligibility. But its too early to speculate on who if anybody would have to sit out games, so this projection is assuming nobody will be suspended. New HC Al Golden was very successful turning Temple from a laughing stock into a consistent bowl team. The Canes are not the team that they use to be in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's but the talent level is better than previous years. The QB spot is up for grabs. Jacory Harris was once a Heisman candidate, so if he can regain his old form they could challenge Virginia Tech for the division title. But that may be easier said than done. Look for the Canes to be a better team, but they are still a couple of years away from making an impact.

3. North Carolina Tar heels, 8-4 (5-3)
The amount of talent that has come out of this Tar Heel program has been amazing. But its more amazing is the general lack of success in terms of wins and losses. Sure they've made it to bowl games but they haven't made it to a single ACC Championship Game. This year should be very interesting. The Tar Heels have to replace a lot of talent that went to the NFL and have to deal without having Butch Davis who was fired right before fall camp. However they still have a ton of talent on defense and are lead by DEs Quinton Coples and Donte Paige-Moss. If they can get some production out of QB Bryn Renner they could end up having a good season, otherwise it could be a long season in Chapel Hill.

4. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 6-6 (4-4)
After winning the ACC in 2009 they fell off and finished last year under .500, including a very bad loss to Kansas. Don't look for a big improvement this year. GT has to replace three year starter at QB in Josh Nesbitt and RB Anthony Allen. However another year under Paul Johnson's triple option could soften the losses.

5. Virginia Cavaliers, 6-6 (2-6)
Virginia is one of those schools that always seems to produce a 1st round pick every year, but never seems to put it all together. But 3rd year HC Mike London has the Cavaliers on the upswing. They return 18 starters from last years team and had a very good recruiting class coming in. Look for Virginia to make a run at being bowl eligible for the first time in a couple of years.

6. Duke Blue Devils, 3-9 (0-8)
David Cutcliff is a very talented coach, but Duke is just such a hard place to win at. He has improved the roster, but it is still going to be a rough season in Durham. Sean Renfree is a very talented QB, but a lack of talent around him will really show. At best they might win a game or two in the conference, but don't count on it.

NFL Power Rankings (Preseason)

1. Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia was already a Super Bowl contender before they went out and brought in key free agents to make them even more dangerous. Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, and Cullen Jenkins give them three impact defenders that add depth to an already talented defense. An adding Steve Smith (Former Giant) is a very very underrated move.

2. New England Patriots
New England was one of the best teams in the NFL last year and after another typical Patriots off season they reloaded and got even better. Trading for Albert Haynesworth and Chad Johnson makes both sides of the ball a lot better. But signing Shaun Ellis away from the Jets could be their best move.

3. Green Bay Packers
Normally I'd put the defending Super Bowl Champions at the #1 spot, but when Philly has the off season of the century its hard to not have them there. Now the Packers didn't go out and make any big moves, but getting back all the players that got injured last year is practically the same as adding a bunch of top level free agents.

4. New Orleans Saints
Another one of the rich gets richer. Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram makes their RB core a lot better. Aubrayou Franklin was a steal and will do wonders for their run defense. But their biggest moves where resigning Bushrod and Nicks.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers
Aside from James Harrison going crazy in an interview the Steelers have been pretty quite. They went out and resigned Ike Taylor which isn't a big time move, but Taylor fits well into their defense and him leaving would have hurt.

6. Atlanta Falcons
A lot of people forget that Atlanta finished 13-3 and the #1 seed in the NFC. But that huge loss to Green Bay skews a lot of people's perception. Adding Julio Jones opposite of Roddy White will help the offense out a ton. DE Ray Edwards gives them the pass rusher they weren't able to get since they traded away so much to get Jones.

7. Houston Texans
If it wasn't for Philly's FA bonanza, Houston would have had the best off season in my opinion. They needed to upgrade their defense and through the draft and free agency they did that. JJ Watt will start at DE day 1. Brooks Reed gives them another rush linebacker while Jonathan Joseph is a top tier CB and Daniel Manning is a very underrated SS. Look for Houston to win their first division and make the playoffs.

8. Indianapolis Colts
Bill Polian finally saw the need to upgrade the offensive line and went out and drafted Anthony Castanzo and Ben Ijalana who could both start as rookies. Ernie Sims could flourish now that he is back in a Cover 2 scheme.

9. Baltimore Ravens
The Raven's weren't the players in free agency that a lot of people thought they would be. Instead of adding key parts they ended up cutting a lot of their offensive fixtures. But Torrey Smith will give Flacco his deep threat he hasn't had in a long time. This will allow Anquan Boldin to do what he does best and work the middle of the field. And we all know the Ravens will only go as far as Flacco takes them.

10. Kansas City Chiefs
After coming out of nowhere the Chiefs were looking to add some pieces to stay atop the AFC West. Steve Breaston reunites with Haley and gives the offense another speedy threat. Kelly Gregg gives them a run stuffer up the middle that they lacked last year. But signing Tamba Hali to an extension was their best move.

12. Chicago Bears
If the Bears would have signed somebody to play guard they would be much higher, but they didn't and outside of drafting Gabe Carimi and that could really come back to bit them in the ass. But adding Roy Williams who had his best year under OC Mike Martz could give Jay Cutler the big threat he has really lacked since coming to Chicago. Vernon Gholston and Amobi Okoye could be under the radar moves that could really help if they bounce back.

13. St. Louis Rams
The Rams didn't make any huge moves, but they made a bunch of small moves that makes them a lot better. Mike Sims-Walker gives Bradford a WR with #1 skills and Ben Leber gives them an upgrade at OLB. Add in that the NFC West is flat out awful and that could lead the Rams to the playoffs.

14. New York Jets
After going to two straight AFC Title Games the Jets are due for a fall off in my opinion. They traded in Braylon Edwards and Jericho Cotchrey for Plaxico. Shaun Ellis was their best defensive lineman last year and he is now a Patriot. Now they have to rely on rookie Muhammad Wilkerson making the jump from the MAC. The Jets talk a big game, but they might not be able to back it up this year.

15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I was really disappointed with the Buccanners this off season. The Bucs went out and upgraded their defensive end by drafting Adrian Clayborn and DaQuan Bowers, but with a ton of money they had to spend in free agency they whiffed big time. With a huge hole at CB they whiffed on note getting Nnamdi Asomugha or Antonio Cromartie. But don't worry, they did spend a bunch of money on a FA....a punter!

16. New York Giants
Here is another big time loser this free agency. The Giants lost TE Kevin Boss and suposive replacement Ben Patrick up and retired. Then injuried but talented WR Steve Smith was poised to return to the team. But instead the Giants slow played him and he ended up leaving to the Eagles. Now Eli Manning is out two of his most reliable targets. Not looking too good.

17. Detroit Lions
The Lions took a big hit losing Mikel LeShoure to injury which would have given the offense a power runner that they lacked last year. But they won't make the jump they are expected to if Matt Stafford can't stay healthy. But a lack of addressing their offensive line might not allow Stafford to make it the entire year.

18. Arizona Cardinals
No matter how good you think Kevin Kolb is, you have to give the Cardinals credit for getting a franchise quarterback. He is a much better outlook than Derek Anderson, Max Hall, and John Skelton. If Kolb can play like he did last year the Cards could be closer to the team they used to be and not the bad team that they were last year.

19. Oakland Raiders
You would think that a team that goes undefeated against the division would actually win the division. However that wasn't the case for the Raiders. If they can get some consistent QB play out of Jason Campbell they could make a run at Kansas City and the division title.

20. Miami Dolphins
If the Dolphins would have worked out the deal for Kyle Orton they might be higher up, but just Chad Henne with no competition isn't good for the Dolphins. But adding Reggie Bush to Daniel Thomas gives them two sets of fresh legs to a team that loves to run the ball. Add in Bush's return abilities and that could help the offense put up more points.

21. Seattle Seahawks
Nobody would have thought the Seahawks would have won the division last year let alone beat the Saints in the playoffs. Add in that they made some big time additions in free agency in Robert Gallary and Sidney Rice you would think that they would be the favorites to repeat as NFC West Champs. However Tavarrius Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst as your projected QBs doesn't spell much success. But hey, maybe they are trying to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes?

22. Buffalo Bills
Buffalo wasn't too active in free agency, but I absolutely loved their draft. Buffalo's biggest weakness was stopping the run. So they drafted Marcel Dareus who was the best player in the draft, ILB Kelvin Sheppard who is a physical down hill run stuffer, and CB Aaron Williams who will probably be moved to FS where he is better suited. Buffalo might not set the world of fire this season, but they'll be a much improved team.

23. Jacksonville Jaguars
Paul Posluszny and Dwan Landry will do a lot to help out their poor defense last year. But their lack of WR talent will really hurt their offense and allow teams to load up the box on MJD. If Garrard doesn't play well or the Jags start the season off slow we could see the start of the Blaine Gabbert era.

24. San Francisco 49ers
A lot of people didn't like what the Niner's have done in this off season, but I do. Aldon Smith was the best pass rusher in the 2011 draft in my opinion and he'll be a perfect fit for the 3-4 outside linebacker. Braylon Edwards was a good signing who will play motivated and give Alex Smith another receiver besides Michael Crabtree. They may struggle, but don't expect them to finish with the worst record in the league.

25. Dallas Cowboys
I'll never get all the hype the Cowboys continue to get. All the national media especially ESPN. Despite their poor season and lack of moves I still hear people say that Dallas is a Super Bowl caliber team. REALLY? Their offensive line is not very good, Tony Romo is vastly overrated. Their secondary sucks. And you have Jerry Jones making the personal decisions which doesn't lead to good moves. Look for another bad year in Big D.

26. Cleveland Browns
Cleveland made a big jump last year and actually were competitive. Peyton Hillis emerged as one of the top RBs in the NFL and Colt McCoy surprised practically everybody in his strong play. A lot of people don't think McCoy is the answer, but I'd like to see him play a full season as a starting QB before I give up or praise him. If Greg Little can shake off the rust the offense could be even better than they were last year.

27. Tennessee Titans
If Chris Johnson's contract holdout lasts into the season it could be a long season for the Titans. Outside of Johnson there really isn't much talent. Unless Kenny Britt decides to stop getting in trouble with the law. I really like the signing of Matt Hasselbeck. He'll be able to teach Jake Locker how to be a pro and do wonders for his development.

28. Minnesota Vikings
Its hard to imagine that the Vikings were the best team in the NFC a couple of years ago. But injuries and poor play by Brett Farve really exposed a lot of their weaknesses. Their offensive line has a bunch of holes, they lost all their top free agents, and the secondary still isn't any good. But Donovan McNabb should come in motivated and if he has one more good season left in him he could elevate the Vikings to respectable, but don't hold your breathe.

29. Denver Broncos
Denver made some solid moves in free agency adding some depth at DT and not trading away Kyle Orton. But they are in for a long road. Josh McDaniels really left this team in shambles. Add in that they have a mess on their hands in the whole Orton/Tebow controversy it could be a really long season in the mile high city. Plus I believe Von Miller will be a tremendous bust and they left Marcel Dareus on the board.

30. Cincinnati Bengals
Andy Dalton and AJ Green are in and Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson are out. I really really like AJ Green and think that he is going to be a good receiver in this league, but if they have to start Andy Dalton its going to be a long season.

31. Carolina Panthers
Carolina did a great job of keeping all their young talent and making the moves to get talented receiving tight ends in Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen. Those two an a happy Steve Smith could give Cam Newton some pieces to help him in his development. But it will still be a tough season and Carolina will probably be picking in the top 3 again.

32. Washington Redskins
I'm not going to pull any punches here. With Rex Grossman or John Beck as their starting quarterback, the Redskins will be competing for the worst record in the NFL and hopefully win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. But its too bad because I like a lot of the moves that they made.

Pac 12 Predictions

The latest in the series of college football predictions we take a look at the Pac 12 conference as they begin their first season with 12 teams and a conference championship game. Enjoy the predictions and the Preseason All Pac 12 Team.

North
1. Oregon Ducks, 12-0 (9-0)
If Chip Kelly would have not run the zone read exclusively at the goal line against Auburn I might be talking about Oregon as the defending National Champions. However they aren't, but don't expect the Ducks to fall back. Oregon brings back practically their entire offense and most of their defensive parts. If they can get past LSU in the season opener and Stanford during conference play they should be back in the BCS Title Game.

2. Stanford Cardinal, 11-1 (8-1)
What Jim Harbaugh did for the Stanford program has to be one of the best program boosts in recent college football history. Stanford routinely finished at the bottom of the Pac 10, then Harbaugh comes in and turns takes them to a BCS Bowl and now top level high school prospects are coming to Palo Alto. However Harbaugh has moved on to the San Francisco 49ers and he brought with him DC Vince Fangio who is very highly regarded and made the Cardinal defense one of the best in the Pac 10. However Stanford was able to keep Andrew Luck around for at least another year. Luck is arguably the best college quarterback since Peyton Manning. He'll lead the offense and they should only get better from the previous two years. Their biggest game will come November 12th when they play against Oregon. If they can win that game they have a shot at playing for a National Title game, if not they'll likely get back to their second BCS Bowl in a row.

3. Washington Huskies, 7-5 (5-4)
The hire of Steve Sarkisian was a great hire for the Huskies who made it to their first bowl game since 2002. Sarkisian has attracted more talent and made the Huskies a lot more competitive. Even though they lost 4 year starting QB Jake Locker they should continue to improve and are lead by RB Chris Polk who is one of the best running backs in the nation and underrated WR Jearmaine Kearse. Look for the Huskies to build off their Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska and have another good season that ends with a second straight bowl appearance.

4. Oregon State Beavers, 6-6 (4-5)
Oregon State always overachievers and gets the most out of their talent. However they are going to struggle on offense now that star JaQuizz Rodgers has left they don't really have many weapons. JaQuizz's brother James is still there but he is coming back from a bad concussion and might not be ready for the start of the season. Ryan Katz is a solid QB, but he is going to have to carry a big load if the Beavers are going to be successful this season.

5. California Golden Bears, 5-7 (2-7)
You would think with all the NFL talent that has come out of the Golden Bear program that they would be bigger contenders for Pac 10 titles. However they have constantly underachieved. A big part of that is due to the QB play. Jeff Teadford is supposedly know for being a QB guru, but he hasn't produced a top level QB since Aaron Rodgers or Kyle Boller. This year should be very similar to the last couple of years. The Bears will be competitive but they'll struggle against top tier Pac 12 teams and either barley make it to a bowl game or miss out. I wonder if the University will start thinking it might be time for a new regime to take over? Just a thought.

6. Washington State Cougars, 2-10 (0-9)
Back in 1997 Washington State was Pac 10 Champion and playing in the Rose Bowl against eventual Co-National Champion Michigan. In 2002 the Cougars were back in the Rose Bowl after another Pac 10 Championship. However HC Mike Price took off to become the HC at Alabama (were he was fired before he even coached a game) and the program hasn't been the same. They hired very successful Paul Wulf who was very successful at Eastern Washington, but he just hasn't been able to have any success while at WSU. This year should be no different. Despite having vastly underrated QB Jeff Tuel the Cougars are void of any other talent. It will be a long year for the Cougars and they'll probably be looking for a new HC for the 2012 season.

South
1. USC Trojans, 9-3 (6-3)
The Trojans have a roster that's full of talent and a three year starter at QB. However no matter how they finish they will not be able to make it to the inaugural Pac 12 Title Game or a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions as a part of the Reggie Bush situation. Which is too bad because none of these players were even on the team when those violations occurred. But that won't stop the Trojans from playing and they should have a good season. QB Matt Barkley is the real deal and he has all the weapons to be successful. The defense should be strong again with another year under legendary DC Monte Kiffen. S TJ McDonald, LB Chris Galippo, and DE Nick Perry should make it difficult for opponents.

2. Arizona State Sun Devils, 9-3 (6-3)
This is the year that Sun Devil fans have been waiting for. Arizona State has an improve team with impact players on both offense and defense. Add in a weak South Division, they could find themselves playing in the first Pac 12 Title Game. On offense they are lead by QB Brock Osweiler who really impressed at the end of last season and they have high hopes that he can take the next step and get the offense back to the Rudy Carpenter days. But they have to have their skill players step up and help him out or he could still struggle. On defense they have ILB Vontaze Burfict who is an all around mean as hell tackling machine, who might be the best defensive player in the country. This could be the year in Tempe, but we've thought that before and have been disappointed.

3. Arizona Wildcats, 6-6 (4-4)
Arizona was looking like they were going to be making the move into the top their of teams in the Pac 10 but they struggled and dropped their final four games. This year they are going to have to prove that last year was a fluke and not lose to teams like Arizona State or Oregon State. Luckily they still have Nick Foles who will be entering his third year as a starter and he has talented WRs in Juron Criner and Dan Buckner. However they have to replace three key defensive lineman that were a big part of their defensive success. If the Wildcats and improve their defense then they could find themselves in the hunt for the South Division crown, otherwise they'll be going to a lower bowl game for a second straight year.

4. Utah Utes, 7-5 (4-5)
The Utes come into the Pac 12 looking to show that they can compete every weekend in a BCS conference after being a BCS buster the past ten years. They'll get their chance in the weaker of the two division, but it will be an uphill battle. On paper USC, Arizona and Arizona State are all better teams. However never count out the Utes. HC Kyle Wittingham is an excellent defensive mind and newly hired OC Norm Chow is looking to get some redemption after being fired from UCLA. Utah has a chance, but it looks like they might have to wait for another year.

5. Colorado Buffaloes, 5-7 (3-6)
Colorado is often overlooked when people talk about teams in new conferences, but the Buffaloes have to be happy to be a part of the Pac 12 where they feel like they are better suited. They've always recruited the west coast pretty hard and they have a lot of their alumni living out in California. As for their chances this season, its going to be tough. They have a new HC in John Emrey who has been with the Washington Redskins that past few seasons. They do have some talent, but the have really underachieved the past three seasons. If Emery can light a fire under them and get some consistent QB play they could surprise. But don't count on it. They'll be at the bottom of the standings.

6. UCLA Bruins, 4-8 (2-7)
I know some people have the Bruins finishing at the top of the South standings, but I'm not seeing it. The Bruins have really been underachievers and the constant assistant coaching changes have lead to no continuity. Add in injuries and inconsistent QB play and that's a recipe for disaster. UCLA is going to have a hard time in the new Pac 12 and they could be another team looking for a new HC for the 2012 season.

SEC Predictions

Every year the SEC has a representative in the National Title game. This year shouldn't be any different. The SEC is the premier conference in college football and will have several teams ranked in the top 25 all year long.

Here is how I believe the SEC will play out this upcoming college football season.

East

1. South Carolina Gamecocks, 10-2 (7-1)

After some years of struggling, Steve Spurrier finally has the Gamecocks a yearly contender for the SEC East Championship and for the SEC Title. This year should be no different. QB Stephen Garcia is back and so is ultra talented RB Marcus Lattimore. If Garcia can stay out of trouble and limit turnovers the Gamecocks will find their way back into the SEC Title Game, and maybe have a chance to win it.

2. Florida Gators, 7-5 (4-4)

Florida struggled in their first year in the post Tebow era, but that was understandable since they had pro style QB John Brantley trying to run a spread running attack. Now that Charlie Weis is now the OC the offense will be built around the stengths of Brantley. On defense HC Will Muschamp will bring some attitude back to a team that seemed to loose that the past couple of years. I'd watch out for Ronald Powell who Muschamp could use much like he did with Brian Orakpo and Sergio Kindle.

3. Georgia Bulldogs, 7-5 (4-4)

A lot of people are higher on Georgia than I am, but I'm just not seeing it. They'll really miss what AJ Green did for their offense and with Caleb King being ineligible will put a lot of pressure on true freshman Isaiah Crowell. However their defense will be strong and Aaron Murray is a very good quarterback. They could surprise me, but I think a 7 or 8 wins is all they will get.

4. Tennessee Volunteers, 6-6 (2-6)

There were a lot of qustion marks about Tennessee last year leading up to the season and after starting the season at 2-6 it was looking like a lost season. However QB Tyler Bray emerged and the Vounteers rallied to win their final four games against the SEC celler dwellers. I have a feeling this year might be very similar. They'll struggle against the top level teams and have a chance against the Vanderbilt'\s and the Mississippi's. However if Tyler Bray can elevate his game they could surprise a few teams and finish with better than two or three wins.

5. Kentucky Wildcats, 6-6 (2-6)

Kentucky finished last season with two wins in the confernece and I don't see them winning more than that this year. Last year they were blessed with two talented offensive weapons in Derek Locke and Randall Cobb. Both are gone and that leaves them without many other options. I would not be surprised if they went winless in confernce play either.

6. Vanderbilt Commodores, 5-7 (2-6)

After going hard after Gus Malzahn to be their head coach they ended up getting James Franklin who was the OC at Maryland. Now Vanderbilt is not a destination job by any means, but the Franklin hired is a dud in my opinion. He was the OC but Maryland's offenses where not anything to brag about. And he'll be coaching in the toughest conference in the NCAA and against some of the best defenses in all of college football. Its an uphill battle and they have a long way to go.

West

1. Alabama Crimson Tide, 12-0 (8-0)

Its crzay how talented the SEC is when Alabama last year had a veteran QB and three first round picks and all the rest of that talent and lost three conference games. This year should be different. The Crimson Tide are loaded on defense and are going to make it very difficult for teams to score on them. The real question mark will be at quarterback. They have Phillip Sims and AJ McCarron battling out at quarterback, but look for the Tide to rely on Trent Richardson to carry the early load till whoever wins the QB race gets more comfortable. But none the less the Tide will be the team to beat and have a great shot to make it back to the National Title game for the second time in three years.

2. LSU Tigers, 10-2 (7-1)

The Bayou Bangles might be one of the most talented teams in all of college football but their success will all be dependent on how well Jordan Jefferson plays at quarterback. Jefferson is very talented, but often makes bone headed decisions that really costs the team. If he can improve his decision making the Tigers will be a National Title contender. But if he doesn't, all will be for not and they'll find themselves back in the Cotton Bowl. No pressure huh?

3. Arkansas Razorbacks, 9-3 (6-3)

Its too bad that the Razorbacks aren't in the SEC East where they would be the favorite to win the division. However they are in the West where 4 out of the 6 teams have a legit shot to win the division (instead of one in the East). Arkansas took a big jump last year finishing with a 10-3 record and a birth in their first BCS Bowl. The good thing is that they return all their skill position players but they have to replace some key starters along the offensive line. They also lost QB Ryan Mallett, but replace him with Taylor Wilson who might not have the physical talents of Mallett, but is a much better decision maker which better suits the offense. The key will be the defense. Bobby Petrino is known for his offenses, but not for his defenses. If they can stop the likes of Alabama and LSU they'll have a shot to win the divison, but that might be too hard of an accomplishment.

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs, 8-4 (4-4)

Mississippi State hit a home run hire when they got Dan Mullen from Florida. Mullen has turned the Bulldogs from SEC West bottom dweller to a 9 win team last year. They are lead by QB Chris Relf who has done a good job running Mullen's spread offense. They have to replace some key linebackers, but the Bulldogs should find themselves in that 8 to 9 win category. But just like Arkansas its too bad they play in the West and not the East where they would contend for a division title rather than having to challenge Alabama and LSU for the West Title.

5. Auburn Tigers, 6-6 (3-5)

You don't see teams win the National Title and they go .500 or wose the next year, but that could very well happen this year. Last year Auburn had the best offensive player in the country in Cam Newton and the most dominant defensive player in Nick Fairley. Those two players elevated a medicore team into a National Title. Both are gone and the Tigers are going to feel it. But Gene Chizik and company are hoping the experience they got last year and the young talent they brought in will allow them to make it to a bowl game. But It will be a long season in Tiger country.

6. Mississippi Rebels, 3-9 (0-8)

I bet Ole Miss fans were wishing that the University didn't fire David Cuttcliff who had the Rebels as a constant 9 win team and yearly bowl appearances. However after they have fired him they had to endure the Ed Orgeron era and now Houston Nutt. Nutt has had one good year (with Orgeron's players) but has struggled since. This year shouldn't be any different. The Rebels don't have the talent and its going to show. They'll be lucky to win a game in conference and Nutt will probably be goon in two or three years.

Offensive Player of the Year: Trent Richardson RB Alabama

Defensive Player of the Year: Devin Taylor DE South Carolina

Freshman of the Year: Isaiah Crowell RB Georgia

Coach of the Year: Steve Spurrier, South Carolina

All SEC Team

QB: Taylor Wilson, Arkansas

RB: Trent Richardson, Alabama

Big 12 Predictions

I've been spending a lot of time lately on the NFL, but with College Football starting soon I'll be taking a look at how I believe each of the conferences will play out.

Today I'm looking into the Big 12 and how it will go without Nebraska and Colorado in the conference.

1. Oklahoma Sooners,12-0 (9-0)
The Sooners are my #1 ranked team in my preseason rankings are obviously they are my favorite to win the Big 12. They return two year starting quarterback Landry Jones and a very underrated WR in Ryan Broyles. Add in a pair of talented sophomore running backs and we always know that Bob Stoops will have a good defense and that could spell a conference championship and a possible BCS Championship Game. As long as Oklahoma can get through Florida State in Tallahassee I don't see any other team in the Big 12 beating them. They are hands and feet better than anybody in this conference.

2. Oklahoma State Cowboys, 10-2 (7-2)
Although the Cowboys lose RB Kendall Hunter and OC Dana Holgerson I still expect their offense keep performing at a high level and a lot of that will be because of my #1 WR Justin Blackmon. Blackmon and QB Brandon Weeden expect to pick up where they left off last year and even improve on their numbers. They key to the Cowboys success will be their defense. OSU hasn't been known for great defenses lately, but to contend with Oklahoma they are going to have to get contain opponents offenses. If they can do that then the sky is the limit, but we'll have to wait and see.

3. Texas Longhorns, 9-3 (6-3)
I was surprised last year when the Longhorns missed out on their bowl game. Texas is full of talented HS recruits and UT always gets their pick of the litter. Head Coach Mack Brown had to replace both of his coordinators and I think he found a good one in OC Bryan Harsin who comes from Boise State. The change in philosophy should really help the Longhorns find an identity, which they didn't have last year. Harsin has worked well with Boise State QB Kellen Moore, so if he can mold Garrett Gilbert the Longhorns can get back to the upper echelon where they have been for the past ten years.

4. Texas A&M Aggies, 8-4 (5-4)
The Aggies are every body's preseason darlings, but I'm not seeing it. They had a couple of good games at the end of the season last year and then got blown out against LSU in the Cotton Bowl. They have some good talent on offense in Jeff Fuller, Cyrus Gray, and Christine Michael. But I believe their defense is going to step back. As much as I believe Von Miller is overrated, his absence is going to hurt them. Tim DeRuyter is one heck of a DC, but he is going to have to find some pass rushers to help the Aggies challenge for the Big 12 crown.

5. Missouri Tigers, 8-4 (5-4)
HC Gary Pinkel has done a great job of turning Missouri from a Big 12 doormat into a team that always has a chance to win the conference. However this year might be a little different. Offensively he has to replace three year starter Blaine Gabbert who run their spread offense perfectly. James Franklin will be taking over and he is more Brad Smith than Blaine Gabbert. Brad Smith was a good quarterback for the Tigers, but Pinkel's offenses where much better with pocket QBs like Gabbert and Chase Daniel. But just like every other year, the Tiger defense will be the key. Last year the defense improved and it showed in an upset of #1 Oklahoma. But they loose impact DE Aldon Smith and have to replace his production.

6. Baylor Bears, 6-6 (4-5)
This is a key year for the Bears of Baylor. Robert Griffen is entering his fourth year in their system and their schedule gets easier since they get to play Iowa State, Kansas, and K State all in one year. However this also means that they still have to go against Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma State. If the Bears can sneak a win out against one of the former Big 12 South powers they could get back to their second straight bowl game.

7. Iowa State Cyclones, 6-6 (4-5)
When the Cyclones hired Gene Chizik I thought they had a great hire. But a couple of bad seasons and he bolts for Auburn. But Chizik's replacement has turned out to be a much better hire. Paul Rhodes is an excellent coach who has Iowa State on the right path. It may not lead to a Big 12 championship but I see Iowa State getting back to the success that Dan McCarney had while here. They'll go to bowl games, knock off a top level team each year (Texas in 2010 Nebraska in 2009), and maybe once every few years contend for a conference championship. This year might not be that year, but they have an improve team with some key starters back. They could surprise some people.

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-6 (4-5)
Firing Mike Leach was the dumbest thing Tech could have every done. Tech was a constant Big 12 title contender under him, but under Tommy Tubberville hasn't had the same success. He isn't getting the same level of players and its showing with them being a Big 12 bottle dweller. I don't see any reason for this to change. Maybe that's why Tubberville has been linked to many other jobs this past off season.

9. Kansas Jayhwaks, 3-9 (1-8)
Tunner Gill did wonders for the Buffalo Bulls which many people thought was a lost cause. So when he was hired to take over at Kansas I thought they were in good hands. However Gill struggled mightily last year and this year looks much the same. The Jayhawks are void of any playmakers and it will be a uphill climb with a tougher schedule. Maybe this is the year we see improvement, but I'm holding my breathe.

10. Kansas State Wildcats, 2-10 (0-9)
Going into this season you would think that the Wildcats could make a jump into the middle tier. They have highly touted Bryce Brown at RB (transfer from Tennessee) and his brother Arthur who is also very highly touted LB (transfer from Miami) but word out of Manhattan is that players aren't showing up for off season workouts. This can't be a good sign. That paired up with a shaky QB situation and I definitely see K State settling into the last place spot in the conference.

Big 10 Predictions

I've been spending a lot of time lately on the NFL, but with College Football starting soon I'll be taking a look at how I believe each of the conferences will play out.

Today I'm looking into the Big 10 and how it will go with new member Nebraska joining the mix.

Legends
1. Nebraska Cornhuskers, 10-2 (6-2)
Nebraska has the best defense in the conference, but question marks about the offense and mainly their quarterback (Taylor Martinez) could see them struggle in their first year in conference.

2. Michigan State Spartans, 9-3 (5-3)
They return a lot of talent, especially on offense with Kirk Cousins and Edwin Baker who are both big time players. However the ball bounced their way a couple of times in close games and they could not get that same luck this season.

3. Iowa Hawkeyes, 9-3 (5-3)
Iowa lucks out that they don't have to play either Wisconsin or Ohio State this season, but they have to travel to Nebraska and always have trouble playing against Northwestern. Add in that they will be replacing 3 year starter in Ricky Stanzi and are very thin at running back.

4. Northwestern Wildcats, 8-4 (4-4)
Here is my sleeper. Pat Fitzgerrald is one heck of a coach and has the Wildcats on the move up. Look for them to catch a team or two looking past them. Add in that Dan Persa if healthy is one of the best quarterbacks in the conference.

5. Michigan Wolverines, 7-5 (4-4)
A lot of Michigan fans weren't too excited about Brady Hoke being named the head coach, but I feel they got the best person for the job. Harbaugh would have always have an eye towards the NFL while Hoke is there to stay. He has had success at Ball State and San Diego State where others have struggled. It may take a year but Michigan will be back.

6. Minnesota Golden Gophers, 4-8 (1-7)
Jerry Kill wasn't a sexy hire but he is a very good coach. However the Golden Gophers are no where near competitive this season and will struggle in the improved Big 10.

Leaders
1. Wisconsin Badgers, 12-1 (7-1)
The Badgers were one of the favorites going into this season, but then they added Russell Wilson from NC State and Ohio State lost Terrelle Pryor and four more key players. I look for Wisconsin to roll through the Big 10 and either go undefeated or have a slip up. Wilson will give them a playmaker at QB that they haven't had in a long time.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes, 9-3 (6-2)
Even though Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressell are gone and they don't have four other key players for the first five games of the year, they still have a ton of talent and are going to win a lot of games. The key is the quarterback play. If Bauserman or Braxton Miller don't lose games the Buckeyes can rely on their defense and running game which is still very good.

3. Penn State Nittany Lions, 8-4 (5-3)
Quarterback play is really going to tell a lot about how he Nittany Lions do this season. Robert Bolden was thought to be the man, but he struggled and butted heads with the coaching staff. In their bowl game Matt McGloin played pretty well. If McGloin can build off of that game they could have a good season. But its like they could repeat last year.

4. Illinois Fighting Illini, 7-5 (4-4)
Nobody really expected much from Illinois last year but they got to a bowl game and routed a Baylor team that many thought would roll Illinois. Nate Scheelhaase has turned out to be a great quarterback and will give the Illini a fighting chance in every game.

5. Indiana Hoosiers, 4-8 (1-7)
I really like the hire of Kevin Wilson to Indiana. Wilson's offenses at Oklahoma were always at the top of the NCAA rankings. However its almost impossible to get talent into Indiana for football and Wilson might find it harder to run his uptempo attack.

6. Purdue Boilermakers, 4-8 (1-7)
Purdue is just a mess. They don't have any real talent or difference makers. This is sad because under Joe Tiller they were always a competitive team that produced a ton of NFL talent. Look for a coaching change at the end of this season.
