Heisman Watch (Week 2)

Week 2 is in the books, and there isn't much change from last week. All the top players either had a week off or continued their typical good performances. However next week there could be some changes. Oklahoma travels to Florida State which could shake up the standings.

1. Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

Last Week: Bye Next Week: @Florida State

Comments: Landry Jones didn't play this week, but next week could be his biggest game of the young season. Florida State is getting a lot of hype around the nation and if Jones can replicate what he did last year against them (380 yards 4 TDs) then he can entrench himself in the #1 spot for a while.

2. Andrew Luck QB Stanford

Last Week: 20/28 290 yards 4 TDs Next Week: @Arizona

Comments: After a slow start Andrew Luck and Stanford ended up rolling Duke in route to throwing for 4 TDs which ties his career high. Its was another strong performance by Luck whose sole INT came when the ball deflected off his receivers hands to a defender. Next week Luck travels to Arizona and faces off against the Wildcats in their first Pac 12 game of the year. Arizona struggled against Oklahoma State's passing attack, so Luck shouldn't have any issues putting up some impressive numbers.

3. Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State

Last Week: 128 yards 2 TDs Next Week: vs Tulsa

Comments: In a game that was never really close, Blackmon continued to show that he is contender for the Heisman Trophy. Against Arizona's over matched defense, Blackmon made up for no TDs last week and came away with 2 to go along with his 128 yards. Next week the Cowboys face off against in state Tulsa who struggled against Oklahoma in week 1. Look for Blackmon to go off against the Golden Hurricanes and keep him in the trophy hunt.

4. Kellen Moore QB Boise State

Last Week: Bye Next Week: @Toledo

Comments: The didn't play this week after their big win against Georgia. However the nation is still talking about Boise State and that is only a good thing for Moore in his quest to lead the Broncos to the National Title game and a shot at the Heisman Trophy. Next week Moore faces off against Toledo who gave Ohio State fits this past weekend. However Boise State and Moore thrives on weekday games and shouldn't have any problems. Look for Moore to complete a high percentage of his passes and put up around 250 yards in a route of the MAC foe. Just the usual.

5. Trent Richardson RB Alabama

Last Week: 111 yards 2 TDs Next Week: vs North Texas

Comments: After a previous week of only rushing for 37 yards, Richardson was back to his old ways and eclipsed the 100 yard mark in a win over top 25 ranked Penn State. With a young QB in AJ McCarron running the show, the Crimson Tide are going to be relying on Richardson to carry the load for them. If Richardson continues what he has done so far the Tide should be back in the National Title hunt for another year. Next week Richardson faces off against Sun Belt opponent North Texas which should be a game where he can pad his stats.

Keep an Eye on

Robert Griffen III QB Baylor

After their impressive win opening week against TCU, the Bears had a much needed week off to get their heads ready for the rest of the season. The next three games for the Bears should be cakewalks which will allow RG3 to load up the stats to gain the attention of the Heisman votes so they don't forget about the TCU game.

LeMichael James RB Oregon

James had a great day on Saturday. He had 181 total yards with 3 touchdowns. However he is starting to get overshadowed by two of his teammates, QB Daniel Thomas and RB DeAnthony Thomas. But his poor performance against LSU will always stick with him.

Daniel Thomas QB Oregon

In his second year as the starter Thomas has been nothing short of spectacular. He was good against LSU, and against Nevada he was even better throwing for 295 and 6 TDs. Right now he is best player on that team and could get the Heisman hype.

David Wilson RB Virginia Tech

Wilson had another solid game in a win against East Carolina. He rushed for 138 yards. His strong play and an easy schedule for the Hokies will give him a shot to be a Heisman finalist.

EJ Manuel QB Florida State

I'm not as high on FSU as a lot of other people are, but its hard not to give credit for how EJ Manuel has been playing. In their win he threw for 329 and 4 TDs. But next week will be their season. If the Seminoles can edge out Oklahoma and Manuel has a good game he can get vaulted into the top of the rankings. But that is easier said then done.

Heisman Watch (Week 1)

1. Landry Jones QB Oklahoma
Last Week: 375 yards 1 TD Next Week: Bye
Comments: It was easy pickens for Jones this past weekend. He had no trouble picking apart the Tulsa defense in route to 375 yards through the air. He only threw for one touchdown, but he'll have plenty more chances over the course of the season to improve on that mark. Next week the Sooners will be off, but they'll be getting ready for Florida State in week 3. That showdown will be a great opportunity for Jones to make an big impression on Heisman voters.

2. Andrew Luck QB Stanford
Last Week: 171 yards passing 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD Next Week: @Duke
Comments: It wasn't a great statistical day for Luck, but when your blowing out a WAC school your not really going to play too deep into the 2nd half. Luck got the job done. He was very efficient throwing 17-26 for 171 yards and two TD throws. He also ran another one in for good measures. Next week Luck and the Cardinal will travel to Duke where he should have another opportunity to put up some numbers in a blow out win. It will be week 3 where he gets his first tough match up against Arizona. But the season will all come down to their match up against conference rival Oregon.

3. Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State
Last Week: 144 yards 0 TD Next Week: vs Arizona
Comments: Last season Blackmon scored a touchdown in every game that he played in. In his first game this season he went TDless. Hold off on sounding the alarms, he'll be fine. He'll get plenty of opportunities to find the endzone throughout the season.Blackmon is such a dominant receiver that no matter how many defenders focus their attention to him, he'll produce. Next week the Cowboys face off against Arizona on Thursday night. That will be a great opportunity for Heisman voters to see him on a national stage where he can grab their attention.

4. Kellen Moore QB Boise State

Last Week: 261 yards 3 TDs 1 INT Next Week: @Toledo
Comments: I'll say the same thing that I said last year. For Kellen Moore to win the Heisman Trophy he is going to need to lead the Broncos to a undefeated record and be in contention for a National Title game. Boise State's win against Georgia is a great first step towards this process. He threw for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 14 point victory. The win and performance by Moore has the nation talking. However Boise's schedule is pretty weak with only TCU being the toughest game left. And after their loss to Baylor everybody knows that they aren't the team they have been.

5. Trent Richardson RB Alabama
Last Week: 37 yards 3 TDs Next Week: @Penn State
Comments: Richardson is a lot of people's preseason Heisman favorite and he did score 3 touchdowns, but only rushed for 37 yards on 13 carries. Not the stats you would assume he'd get in a route of Kent State, but when the defense loads up the box to stop the run and make a new QB beat them its understandable. Richardson will have next week's match up at Penn State to show a national audience what he is really made of. Look for Richardson to bounce back from this low yardage to torch the Nittny Lions in a Alabama win.

6. LeMichael James RB Oregon
Last Week: 54 yards 1 TD Next Week: vs Nevada
Comments: Not a great first game for the 2011 Heisman finalist. He did rush for 54 yards and an early touchdown. But an injury really limited his effectiveness and forced the Ducks to play a true freshman at RB. I wouldn't panic if I were James or Ducks fans. LeMichael James and the Ducks will bounce back from this loss and have a great shot to run the table. Stanford and USC are the only two teams that they could run into trouble with. Next week James should be able to put up huge numbers against a Nevada team that could struggle this year.

Keep an eye on

Daniel Thomas QB Oregon
In the loss against LSU Thomas threw for 240 yards with a TD and an INT. If the Ducks can bounce back from this loss and run the table, Thomas should be right back in the hunt for the Heisman Trophy.

Robert Griffen QB Baylor
RG3 was well known by the Big 12 schools, but an impressive showing in an upset win againstTCU really showed the national how good he is. I'm not ready to go all in on him yet, but 359 yards and 5 touchdowns is a pretty good way to start of the season.

David Wilson RB Virginia Tech
Wilson isn't well known by many, but you'll get to know him this year. The speedster isbenefiting from Darren Evans and Ryan Williams leaving for the NFL and now that he is the man he showed on Saturday. He rushed for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Hokies in a win against Appalachian State. The Hokies have a very easy schedule and have a great shot at running the table. If they do that, Wilson could get a ton of exposure.

Robert Woods WR USC
The Trojans didn't have an impressive win, but Woods really got a lot of attention in the game. Woods set the USC record for catches in a game with 17 and added 177 yards and 3 touchdowns. Woods is extremely talented and should get plenty of opportunities to show off his talents this year.

Geno Smith QB West Virginia

Despite playing in a shortend game, Geno Smith was able to put up big numbers in a route of rival Marshall. Smith threw for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith looked very comfortable playing in Dana Holgerson's spread offense and he'll get plenty of opportunities to put up big numbers throughout the season. If the Mountaineers can win the conference and get some big wins throughout the season he could have a shot at making an appearance in New York City.

Big 12 Predictions

I've been spending a lot of time lately on the NFL, but with College Football starting soon I'll be taking a look at how I believe each of the conferences will play out.

Today I'm looking into the Big 12 and how it will go without Nebraska and Colorado in the conference.

1. Oklahoma Sooners,12-0 (9-0)

The Sooners are my #1 ranked team in my preseason rankings are obviously they are my favorite to win the Big 12. They return two year starting quarterback Landry Jones and a very underrated WR in Ryan Broyles. Add in a pair of talented sophomore running backs and we always know that Bob Stoops will have a good defense and that could spell a conference championship and a possible BCS Championship Game. As long as Oklahoma can get through Florida State in Tallahassee I don't see any other team in the Big 12 beating them. They are hands and feet better than anybody in this conference.

2. Oklahoma State Cowboys, 10-2 (7-2)

Although the Cowboys lose RB Kendall Hunter and OC Dana Holgerson I still expect their offense keep performing at a high level and a lot of that will be because of my #1 WR Justin Blackmon. Blackmon and QB Brandon Weeden expect to pick up where they left off last year and even improve on their numbers. They key to the Cowboys success will be their defense. OSU hasn't been known for great defenses lately, but to contend with Oklahoma they are going to have to get contain opponents offenses. If they can do that then the sky is the limit, but we'll have to wait and see.

3. Texas Longhorns, 9-3 (6-3)

I was surprised last year when the Longhorns missed out on their bowl game. Texas is full of talented HS recruits and UT always gets their pick of the litter. Head Coach Mack Brown had to replace both of his coordinators and I think he found a good one in OC Bryan Harsin who comes from Boise State. The change in philosophy should really help the Longhorns find an identity, which they didn't have last year. Harsin has worked well with Boise State QB Kellen Moore, so if he can mold Garrett Gilbert the Longhorns can get back to the upper echelon where they have been for the past ten years.

4. Texas A&M Aggies, 8-4 (5-4)

The Aggies are every body's preseason darlings, but I'm not seeing it. They had a couple of good games at the end of the season last year and then got blown out against LSU in the Cotton Bowl. They have some good talent on offense in Jeff Fuller, Cyrus Gray, and Christine Michael. But I believe their defense is going to step back. As much as I believe Von Miller is overrated, his absence is going to hurt them. Tim DeRuyter is one heck of a DC, but he is going to have to find some pass rushers to help the Aggies challenge for the Big 12 crown.

5. Missouri Tigers, 8-4 (5-4)

HC Gary Pinkel has done a great job of turning Missouri from a Big 12 doormat into a team that always has a chance to win the conference. However this year might be a little different. Offensively he has to replace three year starter Blaine Gabbert who run their spread offense perfectly. James Franklin will be taking over and he is more Brad Smith than Blaine Gabbert. Brad Smith was a good quarterback for the Tigers, but Pinkel's offenses where much better with pocket QBs like Gabbert and Chase Daniel. But just like every other year, the Tiger defense will be the key. Last year the defense improved and it showed in an upset of #1 Oklahoma. But they loose impact DE Aldon Smith and have to replace his production.

6. Baylor Bears, 6-6 (4-5)

This is a key year for the Bears of Baylor. Robert Griffen is entering his fourth year in their system and their schedule gets easier since they get to play Iowa State, Kansas, and K State all in one year. However this also means that they still have to go against Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma State. If the Bears can sneak a win out against one of the former Big 12 South powers they could get back to their second straight bowl game.

7. Iowa State Cyclones, 6-6 (4-5)

When the Cyclones hired Gene Chizik I thought they had a great hire. But a couple of bad seasons and he bolts for Auburn. But Chizik's replacement has turned out to be a much better hire. Paul Rhodes is an excellent coach who has Iowa State on the right path. It may not lead to a Big 12 championship but I see Iowa State getting back to the success that Dan McCarney had while here. They'll go to bowl games, knock off a top level team each year (Texas in 2010 Nebraska in 2009), and maybe once every few years contend for a conference championship. This year might not be that year, but they have an improve team with some key starters back. They could surprise some people.

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-6 (4-5)

Firing Mike Leach was the dumbest thing Tech could have every done. Tech was a constant Big 12 title contender under him, but under Tommy Tubberville hasn't had the same success. He isn't getting the same level of players and its showing with them being a Big 12 bottle dweller. I don't see any reason for this to change. Maybe that's why Tubberville has been linked to many other jobs this past off season.

9. Kansas Jayhwaks, 3-9 (1-8)

Tunner Gill did wonders for the Buffalo Bulls which many people thought was a lost cause. So when he was hired to take over at Kansas I thought they were in good hands. However Gill struggled mightily last year and this year looks much the same. The Jayhawks are void of any playmakers and it will be a uphill climb with a tougher schedule. Maybe this is the year we see improvement, but I'm holding my breathe.

10. Kansas State Wildcats, 2-10 (0-9)

Going into this season you would think that the Wildcats could make a jump into the middle tier. They have highly touted Bryce Brown at RB (transfer from Tennessee) and his brother Arthur who is also very highly touted LB (transfer from Miami) but word out of Manhattan is that players aren't showing up for off season workouts. This can't be a good sign. That paired up with a shaky QB situation and I definitely see K State settling into the last place spot in the conference.

Comments: Last year saw four quarterbacks go in the first round, but only Blaine Gabbert would break into this top 5. Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, and Landry Jones all project to be franchise quarterbacks and it wouldn't be a shock if all three went in the top 10. Nick Foles and Ryan Lindley are both bigger quarterbacks with strong arms. Foles has to show people that he isn't a system quarterback while Lindley comes from a West Coast Offense. A guy to watch out for is John Brantley from Florida. A highly touted throwing quarterback was not a great fit for Urban Meyer's spread offense. Now that Charlie Weis is in Gainsville Brantley will have an opprotunity to show what he can do in an NFL offense.

Sleeper: Jeff Demps, Florida

Comments: Five years ago Trent Richardson would be a lock to be a top 5 pick, but with the running back position becoming devalued he probably won't go till the mid to late 1st. The 2nd round seems to be the place that most top running backs come off the board. After James its a crap shoot. James is your speedy game breaker while Polk, Gray, and Baker are more traditional between the tackle runners. A guy to keep an eye on is Jeff Demps. Demps is a speedster that should wow everybody at the combine. He is short, but is stocky. He make a team as a return man but could find himself in a Darren Sproles type of role.



Wide Receiver

Sleeper: Jermaine Kearse, Washington

Comments: Everybody seems to be anoiting Jeffery the top receiver, but I like Justin Blackmon a lot better. I look at Blackmon and see Terrel Owens but better hands. He can take it to the house at any point and has the big body to sheild of defenders. Jeffery is good, but he could have trouble seperating from cornerbacks. Ryan Broyles is another receiver that I really like. He is a very similar player to Santonio Holmes in that he is a good route runner and has the speed and quickness to get open. Jermaine Kearse is my sleeper to watch. When I saw Washington play this past season he really impressed me. He runs good routes and has good hands. He reminds me of a faster Vincent Brown that came out of San Diego State last year.

Comments: Fullbacks are starting to become an endangered species. With offenses becoming pass oriented the fullback and tight end positions are starting to merge. Last year Kyle Rudolph was the top rated tight end and didn't go till the the middle of the second round. This year we have Michael Egnew and Dwayne Allen as the top two tight ends but I would highly doubt either of them come close to the first round. Joe Halahuni and Cody Johnson are the top two fullbacks by many people but both don't play the position in college.



Tackle
1. Matt Kalil, USC

Sleeper: David Pickard, Southern Illinois

Comments: Tyron Smith was the first tackle taken in the 2010 NFL Draft, but he didn't even play left tackle in college. Thats because Matt Kalil was manning the position. Kalil and Jonathan Martin are two top flight tackles that should go in the top 10 and Kalil has the opprotunity to go top 3. Reilly Rieff carries on the tradition of good Iowa offensive lineman. Nate Potter is a guy to watch out for. He isn't going to be confused for a road grader, but he is very athletic, has good technic, and good length. He'd be a great fit in a zone blocking scheme and could protect a quarterback's blind side for many years.


Guard

Sleeper: Mike Remmers, Oregon State

Comments: With the importance of protecting the quarterback at an all time high your starting to see more and more teams looking at guards at the end of the first round. This year has a strong group of gaurds that might be the best in a couple years. Osemele plays left tackle at Iowa State but profiles to be a mauling guard. David DeCastro has be a constant at Stanford and open hole for Toby Gerhart and protected Andrew Luck. Ryan Miller is a huge guard standing at 6'8 but he is a very good athlete and could play guard or right tackle.

Center

Sleeper: Kai Maiava, UCLA

Comments: The 2010 center class was probably one of the weekest position groups I've seen in a while. Mike Pouncey, Stefen Wisneiwski, and Brandon Fusco where the all centers taken. This year is a little better but not by much. Brewster is a stud and will carry on the tradition of 1st round centers. Vlachos has been a consistent starter but will probably be a 2nd rounder at best.

Heisman Watch (Season Preview)

Its that time again. Now that the college football season is fast approaching its time to look at the players that are going to make a run at the most prestigious award in all of college football. Last year we saw Cam Newton come out of nowhere to have one of the most impressive seasons in college football history. Who will win it this year? Don't know yet, but here are some of the players that have the best chance.

Andrew Luck QB Stanford

Clearly the top quarterback in all of college football, Andrew Luck is in a good spot to take home some hardware this season. Last year Luck threw for 3,338 yards and 32 touchdowns while leading the Cardinal to their first BCS Bowl game in school history. This year Luck goes into the season without head coach Jim Harbaugh who is now the with the San Francisco 49ers. Stanford along with Oregon is favored to win the Pac 12 and if Luck can replicate last year's numbers and put Stanford in the hunt for a National Title he'll find himself back in New York for a second straight year. Something to think about is that the Heisman voters might want to give the award to somebody that they know for sure is not going to have to give the trophy back a couple years down the road. It's unlikely, but something to think about.

Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

Two years ago when Sam Bradford was injured in the first game of the season and many people where concerned how redshirt freshman Landry Jones was going to fill in for him. Jones played alright his first season, but really flourished last year throwing for 4,718 yards and 38 touchdowns in leading the Sooners to a 12-2 record, a Big 12 Title, and a Fiesta Bowl victory. Now that Jones is in his third season as the starter the sky is the limit. Add in that he has all of his weapons back from a year ago and you can only assume that Jones will continue to put up video game type numbers. Add in that the Big 12 isn't as strong as it was a couple of years ago and the Sooners should be in the hunt for the National Title game and that will put Jones in the hunt for the Heisman Trophy.

LeMichael James RB Oregon

James had a breakout year last season helping the Ducks reach the National Title Game. Despite missing the first game of the season he rushed for 1,731 yards and 21 touchdowns. That impressive season landed James with an invite to the Heisman Trophy Presentation where he finished in third place. Coming into this season he has as good of a chance as anybody of bringing home the prestigious award. James is a threat every time he touches the ball and he'll get plenty of opportunities next year as the Ducks look to make a return visit to the title game. However James could he hurt by the improving Darron Thomas and the up and coming fellow running backs Kenjon Balmer and Lache Seastrunck who could all take touches away from him. But look for James to be the focal point for the Ducks and continue to rack up numbers and attention.

Darron Thomas QB Oregon

Speaking of Darron Thomas. Thomas wasn't the starter going into the 2010 season, but when Jeremiah Mosoli was kicked off the team they keys to the offense were handed over to the young Thomas who hadn't seen a lot of game action. All Thomas did was improve the already potent offense and take the Ducks to the National Title game. Thomas is at his best when the Ducks are n their high tempo speed offense that keeps keeps the defense off balance and not knowing what is going on. Thomas made most of his damage running the zone read and throwing short passes. However another year in the offense and we could see Thomas expanding on his responsibilities and taking more risks throwing the ball. This along with another impressive run by the Ducks and we could see Thomas being the Ducks representative in New York.

Trent Richardson RB Alabama

I've always thought that Richardson was the best running back for Alabama, even better that previous Heisman winner Mark Ingram. But now that Ingram is gone Richardson is going to get a chance to show what he can do when he is the feature back and not complementing Ingram. Alabama should once again be in the running for the National Championship and Richardson, much like Ingram did in 2008, has a good chance to win the Heisman Trophy by being the best player on the best team. Richardson has the chance to put up some big time numbers in some big time games in front of a lot of Heisman voters.

Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State

He didn't get an invitation to New York last year for the trophy presentation, but Blackmon's strong season earned him 5th place in the voting. Blackmon is one of the top wide receivers in college football and is a big time playmaker who can take it to the house whenever he gets the ball into his hands. What is even more impressive was that Blackmon scored a touchdown in every game he played last year. Bt the biggest threat to Blackmon winning the award is that the Heisman usually goes to a quarterback or runningback. However Blackmon is going to get the ball thrown to him even more this year and he'll look to improve his numbers and that would be very hard for voters to ignore him.

Taylor Martinez QB Nebraska

The redshirt freshman burst onto the scene last year running all over defenses. His early season success started to pick up some Heisman steam but was derailed 8 games into the season when he suffered a nasty high ankle sprain and turf toe in a win against Missouri. When healthy Martinez was a dangerous threat running the ball and then that lead to him being able to throw the ball more effectively too. But an increased focus on stopping him and injuries derailed an impressive start. Martinez rushed for 886 of his 965 yards in those first first eight games but Martinez still has a lot of room to grow as a quarterback but if he picks up where he left off with before the Missouri game and he could get the invitation to New York.

Denard Robinson QB Michigan

Denard Robinson was looking like he was going to literally run away with the Heisman Trophy. Through the first five games of the season the Wolverines were looking to be back. They were off to a 5-0 start and Robinson was running circles around opposing teams. However three straight losses and some nagging injuries to Robinson really sent Michigan into a tailspin. However it wasn't all Robinson's fault. Michigan's defense was flat out atrocious and the offense was simply not able to outscore every other team. This year the Wolverines have a new coaching staff and an increased focus on fixing the defense. If Michigan can actually stop somebody and Robinson can stay healthy they could really make the a jump and that could lead to Robinson sustaining his Heisman buzz.

Geno Smith QB West Virginia

It seems like Geno Smith is every body's dark horse candidate to win the Heisman Trophy. Smith is garnering so much attention because he has all the physical tools you would want out of a quarterback and the Mountaineers now have one of the best offensive minds in Dana Holgerson as his new head coach. Last year Smith threw for 2,763 yards and 24 touchdowns. However, with the spread offense that Holgerson brings to West Virginia Geno Smith's numbers will only improve. But it's going to take West Virginia contending for a BCS Bowl and Smith's numbers to improve to be considered for the trophy. Heisman voters like to go with players from the big schools or guys whose teams are challenging for the National Championship. To me Smith is a long shot, but somebody to definitely to watch.

EJ Manuel QB Florida State

Florida State is starting to become every body's darling this year and if they end up winning the ACC that could lead to them having a Heisman contender. The most logical person to consider is quarterback EJ Manuel. Manuel stepped up last year when Christian Ponder was injured and despite losing to Virginia late in the season he played very well. If he continues to develop he could help Florida State make it to their first BCS Bowl in a long time. However projecting success after only a couple of starts is never a great indicator of future success. But their game against Oklahoma at the beginning of the season will tell us a lot.

Marcus Lattimore RB South Carolina

When somebody gets called the next Adrian Peterson before he even starts his college career, you have to take it with a grain of salt. However after an impressive true freshman season the comparison to Peterson isn't too far off. Last year Lattimore rushed for 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns in helping the Gamecocks make it to the SEC championship game. However the Gamecocks offense should be much better and another year on campus will make Lattimore and even better player. The sky is the limit for Lattimore and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in New York City sometime in the next couple of years.

Kellen Moore QB Boise State

Kellen Moore was my pre-season favorite to win the Heisman last year because I felt that Boise State being ranked in the top 5 at the beginning of the season, having an easy schedule, and him always putting up huge numbers. All of that together added up to the most likely to win the award. However I only felt he would win the award if Boise State was undefeated and playing in the National Title game. But a late season loss to Nevada and Cam Newton having an unbelievable season ended any shot of Moore winning the Heisman Trophy. this year should be very similar. Moore will be a contender as long as Boise State is contending for a National Title but if they aren't, neither with Moore.

Russell Wilson QB Wisconsin

If Russell Wilson would have remained at North Carolina State I doubt he would have been a contender for the Heisman. Mainly because NC State isn't a favorite to win the ACC and they don't ahve a lot of weapons that would allow Wilson to put up Monster numbers. However Wilson isn't at NC State but at Wisconsin where they are expected to have a much better season. With all the drama that is going on at Ohio State, Wisconsin is now the favorite to win the Leaders Division and contend for the Big 10 title. With Wilson at quarterback the Badgers fill one of their few question marks with a dynamic playmaking quarterback that can take some pressure off the running game by not allowing defenses to load up the box to stop the run. Now Wisconsin isn't going to be a passing team now, but they could have found their leader to help take them to the next level. And that success could lead to hardware for Wisconsin and Wilson.

Taylor Wilson QB Arkansas

Ryan Mallett helped Arkansas reach the Sugar Bowl in 2010 but there are many people that believe that Wilson might end up being a better quarterback fro the Razorbacks. In limited action last year Wilson really shined, including putting up 332 yards and 4 touchdowns against National Champion Auburn. Wilson doesn't have as strong of an arm as Mallett, but he has better mechanics and doesn't force balls like Mallett was known to. Add in that Arkansas has improved as a team and should challenge LSU for the SEC West and they should remain in the National media attention. But the biggest thing to remember is that Bobby Petrino's offenses usually lead to big numbers for the quarterbacks. All of that should lead to some Heisman buzz for Wilson.

2012 Mock Draft (1st Edition)

1. Washington Redskins: Andrew Luck QB Stanford

This is a slam dunk pick. The Redskins had a poor draft and with John Beck as their quarterback going into next year they should be a lockfor contending for the 1st overall pick. Andrew Luck is arguably the highest rated quarterback prospect to come into the draft since Peyton Manning. He would have been the #1 pick in the 2011 draft if he would have came out.

2. Carolina Panthers: Alshon Jeffery WR South Carolina

Carolina just invested the #1 pick in the 2011 draft in Cam Newton and now they have to do everything to allow him to be successful. Right now the Panthers have some solid receivers, but they don't have that guy that a QB can just throw the ball to and trust that he'll go up and get it. Alshon Jeffery is that guy. In the mold of an AJ Green or Julio Jones, Jeffery isn't going to blow you away with his speed, but he is going to give the quarterback that security blanket that he needs.

3. Denver Broncos: Jerel Worthy DT Michigan State

Worthy has been a big part of Michigan State's rise to success the past couple of years. He is a disruptive force in the middle that often saw double teams on every play. Denver went into the 2011 NFL draft needing to find two new starters at the position, but instead ignored it completely. Look for their run defense to struggle again, leading to them taking Worthy.

4. Arizona Cardinals: Matt Kalil OT USC

It did not surprise me at all that the Cardinals did not draft a quarterback in the 2011 NFL Draft. The organization is very high on John Skelton and want to develop him into the starting quarterback. Look for them to sign a veteran once the lockout ends. The 2012 season will be where Skelton makes his move. Arizona is going to do everything they can to make Skelton successful and a great start would be to draft a bookend left tackle. Matt Kalil is a very athletic tackle who has the quick feet and strong base you need out of a left tackle. Kalil (brother of Carolina starter center Matt Kalil) was so talented, that USC had 2011 #9 pick Tyron Smith play right tackle.

5. Minnesota Vikings: Jonathan Martin OT Stanford

The Minnesota Vikings are probably the team that will be hurt the worst by the lockout. They have a new coaching staff and a rookie quarterback. Even if they bring in a veteran quarterback they won't have long to mesh with the rest of the team. Factor in some other big holes and you have a team that will be picking in the top 5. One of the biggest needs the Vikings ignored could be the one that really affects their offense. A once strong offensive line has really gotten old in a hurry. Bryant McKinnie was a good left tackle, but has lost his quickness and would be better off at right tackle. That would allow them to move Phil Loadholt into guard where he might be better off too. Jonathan Martin has done an excellent job of protecting Andrew Luck the past three years. Martin has the best technique in the draft and if he continues to improve on his footwork the sky is the limit.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Quinton Coples DE North Carolina

There was talk that the Bengals could go after defensive ends DaQuan Bowers or Robert Quinn. However with AJ Green available and Bowers knee injury they went for the offensive playmaker. The Bengals have some young talent at the position in Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson, but only Dunlap looks to be a full time starter. Quinton Coples is an explosive defensive end who has great athletic ability and strength. He is defenitley the type of player the Bengals love to draft.

7. Tennessee Titans: Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama

Kirkpatrick is going to be one of many Alabama players that will have the chance to go in the first round. Kirkpatrick burst onto the scene last year making Crimson Tide fans forget all about Javier Arenas and Kareem Jackson. Kirkpatrick has a great blend of size, speed, and body control. He is clearly the top cornerback in the draft and has a shot of going very high with another good season. Although Tennessee has solid corners in Verner and Finnegan it would be too hard to pass up on Kirkpatrick here.

8. Seattle Seahawks: Matt Barkley QB USC

Everybody and their dog thought that the Seahawks would go after a quarterback of the future. Well they passed on Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, and Ryan Mallett. Heck they didn't even take a QB at all. This means that they are either ready to hand over the reigns to Charlie Whithurst or they didn't really like any of the quarterbacks at that position in the draft. I'm leaning towards the second. They did give up a lot to get Whithust, but he isn't anything more than a bridge to the next franchise quarterback. Look for Seattle to take a step back from last year and that will put them in a position to get Pete Carroll's former quarterback Matt Barkley. Barkely has started since his freshman year and has done a great job progressing. He has everything you would want in a quarterback.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Donte Page-Moss DE North Carolina

With a ton of holes along their defense the Jaguars waited till the 5th round to draft a safety. The Jaguars have been lacking a pass rushing presence for a couple of years. They signed Aaron Kampman, but a knee injury makes him questionable for next year. Donte Page-Moss is the type of athletic smaller defensive end that the Jags like. On a side not, do you ever wonder why North Carolina has been pumping out talent lately, but have failed to win their conference? Just saying.

10. Dallas Cowboys: Stephen Gilmore CB South Carolina

Yeah end and year out the Cowboys are projected to be a Super Bowl contender. Personally I don't see it. I see some talent on the team, but other than DeMarcus Ware there really isn't an elite player on their roster. Add in some big holes and poor draft after poor draft has me believing they'll be in the same range as they were last year. At least last year they took a lineman in the first round for the first time in like 20 years. However they refused to invest a high round pick on a cornerback or safety which is their biggest need. After another year of getting burned Jerry Jones might realize (like he did with OT last year) and draft a cornerback in the first round.

11. Buffalo Bills: Nate Potter OT Boise State

Its pretty clear the the Bills feel very comfortable with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their quarterback. Now if they are in the position to draft Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, or Landry Jones they could go that route, but until I'm proven otherwise I think they address another position. One of the biggest weaknesses the offense has had is protecting the quarterback. Demetrius Bell was their starting left tackle last year and he was alright, but he was a right tackle playing the left side. They did draft Chris Hairston in the later rounds, but he'll be a right tackle too. If one of the top left tackles are available in this draft they'll go after one of them. Nate Potter is one of the top left tackle prospects that is draft eligible. Potter has great size and length to go along with good athletic ability. He's a true left tackle and would give Ryan Fitzpatrick the time he needs to throw.

12. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State

If Justin Blackmon would have declared for the 2011 draft he probably would have been the #14 selection to the Rams. Well in this scenario the Rams lucked out and are able to get him after all. Blackmon is an explosive receiver that is basically Terrell Owens but faster. And without all the headaches. The Rams did draft two receivers last year, but both Salas and Pettis are more possession guys where Blackmon will stretch the field and give Bradford his #1 wide receiver which he is lacking.

13. Cleveland Browns: Manti Te'o LB Notre Dame

I've really liked what the Cleveland Browns have been doing since Mike Holmgren has taken over. The team continues to get better and makes a lot of smart decisions on players. As they continue to build their 4-3 defense they are looking for impact players. Mani Te'o is a highly regraded player coming into college and has lived up to the billing. He can play any position along the linebacking core and could really help out a defense that has some holes at the position.

14. Miami Dolphins: Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

Miami is not happy with the way Chad Henne is developing and seriously considered taking a quarterback in the 2011 draft. However they did not like the value that was there at their picks and went another direction. Look for the Dolphins to bring in some competition for Henne once free agency starts. If Henne continues to fall they'll look at a quarterback again. Luckily this draft has three top level prospects at the position and they could get one of them. All Landry Jones has done at Oklahoma is pick up where Sam Bradford has left off. He is a big quarterback with a cannon for an arm. He'll be a good fit in Miami.

15. Oakland Raiders: Marcus Forston DT Miami

I am really tempted to give the Raiders Riley Reiff here, but with them taking Robert Gallary at #2 a couple of years ago (even though he has developed into a very good guard) I think Al Davis will stay away from Iowa offensive lineman. Here the Raiders get a player that they'll fall in love with. Forston is a big boy that is very athletic. Foston can be plugged into the middle next to Richard Seymour and give them a strong presence day 1.

16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Riley Reiff OT Iowa

Cornerback really seems to work here, and I really want to give them one. However their offensive hasn't been the greatest and if they want Josh Freeman to take the next step, they are going to have to improve the line to keep him standing upright. If there is one consistent about the University of Iowa it that they will always pump out quality offensive lineman. Riley Reiff is another in the long line. Much like Brian Bulaga and Robert Gallary, Reiff is a physical run blocker that isn't a great athlete but will be fundamentally sound.

17. Detroit Lions: Vontaze Burfict LB Arizona State

When you are drawing comparisons to Rey Lewis, that has to mean something. We haven't heard much from prospects out of Arizona State lately, but they have a pretty good one here in Vontaze Burfict. The leader of the team is a talented player who can do about anything he wants on a football Field. He can line up in the middle and stop the run, drop into coverage, and blitz. The Lions had some big holes at linebacker and cornerback and instead of addressing them in the draft they continued to take best available player. Well in this draft I look for them to continue the trend but this pick would get them best player and fill a big need.

18. Houston Texans: Kenny Tate S Maryland

The Houston Texans ended the 2010 season with the worst pass defense in the NFL. Many thought they'd make a run at one of the top cornerbacks to help improve the spot, but they choose to instead add peices to their new 3-4 defense. Word is that they'll move Glover Quinn to the free safety spot which is a better spot for his skill set. By adding Kenny Tate this would allow them to lock down the strong safety spot and give them a playmaker at the back end of the secondary. Tate is a big in the box safety that has the athletic ability to still drop into coverage.

19. New York Giants: Trent Richardson RB Alabama

The once proud running game of the New York Giants has really fallen off the past couple of years. The punishment that Brandon Jacobs body has taken has made him more of a power back and Ahmad Bradshaw has talent, but cannot hold onto the ball. New York decided to stick with Jacobs and Bradshaw but in they endure another season of struggles they will look for a fresh new race. Even after winning a Heisman Trophy, it was clear that Mark Ingram wasn't the most talented back on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Trent Richardson had it all and didn't have the durability concerns of his teammate. Richardson is also faster and a better receiver out of the backfield. He'd make a good feature back and is also use to sharing carries so he could be worked in with either Jacobs or Bradshaw if needed to.

20. San Diego Chargers: Courtney Upshaw LB Alabama

San Deigo once had one of the most dominant defenses in the league. Shawn Merriman and Shuan Phillips where often too much for opposing offensive lines to deal with. However once Merriman got off the roids he was never the same player. The Chargers drafted Larry English to provide depth and a relief, but he has been a major disappointment. Look for the Chargers to try and fix the the problem and find some young playmakers coming off the edge. Courtney Upshaw has been a big part of the success of the Alabama defense. He is a versatile linebacker that terrorizes opposing quarterbacks. Adding him to the guys they already have could really help the defense out.

21. San Francisco 49ers: Jared Crick DT Nebraska

Kentwan Balmer was drafted out of North Carolina to be a space eater at defensive end for their 3-4 defense. However he has never lived up to expectations and then last year during training camp he just refused to come to camp and was traded to Seattle. Even though he didn't really produce for the 49ers they could really use somebody to help fill the void. Jared Crick has had a couple of monster seasons at Nebraska and if he continues he could fly up the draft boards. Crick can play in multiple defensive schemes, but he'll be at his best in the 3-4 because he plays with good leverage and knows how to make plays in a two gap system. Crick's intelligence and non stop motor will be very appealing to Jim Harbaugh.

22. Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Keachly LB Boston College

Under General Manager Scott Pioli he has tried to make Kansas City into the New England Patriots. He wants to build through the draft and get smart football players to have the speed to make plays. In New England he had Teddi Bruschi manning the middle of the 3-4 defense so if he has a chance to get another player like Bruchi he'll go after him. Luke Keachly might never be Teddi Bruschi but he is a very intelligent linebacker who always knows where to be. He is a good leader and a tough hard nosed inside linebacker. He'll fit in very will in Romeo Crennel's defense and provide them with another coach on the field.

23. Chicago Bears: Alphonso Dennard CB Nebraska

In the early to mid 2000's the Tampa 2 was all the rave. With the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccanners, and Indianpolis Colts having success running the defense other teams were looking to jump aboard. But over time more teams went away from the Tampa 2 and towards either the 3-4 or other variations of the 4-3. Chicago is now one of only a few teams that run the defense, but even they are not playing it as much as they use to. This past season the Bears run a lot more single high safety and had their corners match up man to man. The problem was that their cornerbacks were a weakness. Charles Tillman was solid, but isn't a true man to man corner. Opposite of him Zach Bowman was in the doghouse and Tim Jennings was often over powered by physical receivers. The Bears understand that they need help and could go after Alphonso Dennard to provide help. Dennard might be the biggest cornerback, but he is very strong and very physcial. He loves to play bump and run and would be a great fit in the Bears hybrid Tampa 2 defense.

24. New York Jets: Brandon Jenkins DE Florida State

For as good as the Jets defense has been, they haven't really had any production out of their rush linebackers. Vernon Gholston was drafted with the thought that he'd be the next DeMarcus Ware but he'll be in a new uniform next year. Jason Taylor was signed but his production wasn't anything spectacular and he'll also be retired or elsewhere next year. Look for the to look into adding somebody and this draft could be the route they go. Brandon Jenkins is a defensive end at Florida State but he is a good athlete that should transition well to the stand up position in the 3-4.

25. Cleveland Browns (From Atlanta): Ray Ray Armstrong S Miami

In Atlanta's move up in the 2011 draft to get Julio Jones, they had to give up their 2012 first round pick amongst other picks. Cleveland who is the middle of rebuilding will be able to use these picks to getplayers to fit their new schemes. In the 2010 draft the Browns shocked everybody by taking TJ Ward early in the 2nd round much sooner than everybody thought he'd go. And not only has Ward played well, he looks to be a future All Pro. But next to Ward they have some issues. Ray Ray Armstrong is a dynamic athlete that has the range and speed to cover the deep zones and allow Ward to make more plays in the middle and in the run game.

26. Indianapolis Colts: Mark Barron S Alabama

For the longest time the Colts have struggled to stop the run and that has always doomed their defense. However when Bob Sanders was healthy the defense was much different and their running woes where no longer there. The problem was that Sanders is chronically hurt and now is a member of the San Diego Chargers. They've used some no name rookies and journymen tofill in for Sanders, but they haven't had the same impact. Mark Barron might never be as good as a healthy Bob Sanders, but he is no slouch. One of the leaders of the Alabama Crimson tide defense is an intricatel part of their championship level defense. He'd give them that in the box safety that can also drop into coverage and make plays too.

27. New England Patriots (From New Orleans): Cliff Harris CB Oregon

New England is always up to the same tricks. Every draft you can assume that they'll be moving up and down to get players that they really want. In the 2011 draft they traded away one of their two first round picks to the Saints so that New Orleans could get Mark Ingram. So when this pick comes up will they be the team that is making the pick or will it be somebody else? I guess we'll have to wait and see. But if New England stays put they will have a hard time passing on a cornerback like Cliff Harris. Build in the same mold as Asante Samuel, Harris is a very quick corner who loves to take chances in coverage and would thrive in their defense which has their corners making plays going forward. Harris is also a dynamic punt returner and could help the Patriots in that capacity also.

28. Baltimore Ravens: Andre Branch DE Clemson

Last year the thought was that if Jimmy Smith wasn't available in the first round that they could go after a Cam Heyward to provide help along the defensive line. Ngata and Gregg are very solid starters with Terrence Cody providing depth at the nose tackle. However at the other end is where they are thin. Corey Redding has been solid, but he is an aging veteran and is nearing the end of his career. Andre Branch is one of the many Clemson Tiger defensive lineman that are first round talents. Branch does a great job taking on blockers and playing two gaps. His skills would allow Rey Lewis, Terrell Suggs and the rest of the linebackers to roam free and make plays.

29. Philadelphia Eagles: Travis Lewis LB Oklahoma

There are a few constants in the NFL. The Patriots will always be able to swindle first round picks out of teams, Oakland will always take speed in the draft, and the Eagles will have injuries to their linebacking core. Every year its the same thing. Stewart Bradley looked to become one of the top linebackers in the NFL but two knee surgeries later he isn't the same person. After another year of injuries the Eagles might find it necessary to invest a first round pick in a linebacker that can help make an impact. Travis Lewis has always been a high thought of linebacker. After his redshirt sophomore year he could have been a first round pick if he would havecame out. Last year he had a disappointing season, but he has the raw talent to be a very good linebacker in the NFL. He has good speed, is a good tackler, and can play in coverage. He'd be a good fit in the Eagles system because they like athletic linebackers that can do a lot of different things.

30. New England Patriots: Michael Brewster C Oho State

With their second pick of the first round the Patriots could look to get younger along the offensive line. In the 2011 draft they took Nate Solder to be their future left tackle and Marcus Cannon to be a future right guard. Here New England can get their future center in Brewster who has been a rock for the Ohio State offense. Brewster is a nasty center that will remind a lot of people of another former Buckeye named Nick Mangold.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kelechi Osemele G Iowa State

It continues to amaze me how the the Steelers can be so successful with such a bad offensive line. They struck gold last year with drafting Maurkice Pouncey who has turned out to be an All Pro center. However they are still weak at tackle and at guard. There were reports that they were looking to move up get Maurkice's twin brother Mike but either didn't want to give up the pick necessary to move into the top 15 or thought that the value wasn't there. Whichever one was the reason it won't matter much because the Steelers need to improve and build around Pouncey. A great place to start is with Osemele from Iowa State. You don't hear much from Iowa State when it comes to draft prospects, but Osemele is the real deal. He plays left tackle for the Cyclones but should translate well inside at the guard spot. Osemele is a big physical runner blocker who will fit well into the Steelers run first scheme.

32. Green Bay Packers: Dont'a Hightower LB Alabama

Green Bay has had a lot of success in their transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 system and they often like to play with only two down lineman and have more linebackers on the field to confuse offenses. So the Packers love to have versatile linebackers who can rush the passer and still play in coverage. Dont'a Hightower would be a perfect fit for them. At Alabama Hightower often lines up as an inside linebacker on early downs and then slides over to a rush linebacker on passing downs. Pairing him up with AJ Hawk, Nick Barnett, and Clay Matthews would give the Packers another young impact player.
