Big 10 Preview

Leaders
1.  Wisconsin Badgers (10-2, 6-2)
It's funny that Wisconsin has won the Big 10 Title the past two seasons and return a team that has a chance to win the league again, yet nobody is talking about them.  All we hear is Ohio State and Michigan.  Even if the Badgers have an easy road to the Big 10 Championship Game (Ohio State and Penn State are ineligible).  But Wisconsin is no slouch.  Without Russell Wilson, look for Wisconsin to focus the offense on RBs Monte Ball and James White.  This should look like your Wisconsin teams of old.

1.  Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2, 6-2)
Even though the Buckeyes aren't eligible to play in the conference championship, they are thought to be one of the best teams in the conference.  Defensively they'll be stout.  They have proven players through all three units and plenty of depth.  But the issues they have will be with the offense.  They return QB Braxton Miller who should thrive in Urban Meyer's spread offense, but they lack many playmakers on the outside that will help.  If they get some help, the schedule is very winnable.  If not, they'll likely still finish with 9 wins.

3.  Illinois Fighting Illini (8-4, 4-4)
Ron Zook might not have be able to get many wins, but he could sure bring in talent.  So the cupboard is definitely not bare for new HC Tim Beckum.  Don't forget that Florida won a National Title with Zook's players.  Now I don't see that happening for Illinois, but they do have a ton of talent.  Especially on offense where QB Nate Scheelhaase is one of the best in the league.  He should fit in perfectly in Beckum's spread offense that was always one of the best while at Toledo.  This should definitely be a good year for the Illini and maybe they can sneak their way into the championship game.  But that's a stretch.

4.  Purdue Boilermakers (5-7, 2-6)
For some people, Purdue is a sleeper team in the Leaders division.  Really?  Yeah they return 15 starters, but it's not like this team was that great to begin with.  They also benefit from not playing Nebraska and Michigan State out of the Legends Division.  I see this team battling to get to a bowl game, not the Big 10 Championship.  They do have some talent.  Kwann Short is one of the best DTs in the league and Antavian Edison is a good receiver.  But there really isn't a whole heck of a lot more.  Then you also have Danny Hope as the coach, who nobody has much faith in.

5.  Penn State Nittany Lions (4-8, 1-7)
Penn State was poised to have a good season, but once the NCAA sanctions were handed down it was clear that wouldn't be true.  11 players left the program including their two best offensive players.  RB Silas Redd transferred USC and WR Justin Brown to Oklahoma.  The defense didn't lose much and still should be solid, but it's going to be very hard to score points without their two real weapons.  But I have a feeling most Penn State fans just want to get this season over with.

6.  Indiana Hoosiers (2-10, 0-8)
HC Kevin Wilson's first season at Indiana couldnt' have gone any worse.  Well I guess they could have gone win less.  There isn't much hope in sight.  Unlike other bottom feeders in the conference the Hoosiers don't really have any true difference makers on the roster.  Luckily for Hoosier fans their basketball team is going to be real good.

Legends
1.  Michigan Wolverines (11-2, 7-1)
After a huge season last year the Wolverines are every body's darling.  Predicted to win the Big 10 and be a dark horse contender for the National Title.  The biggest reason for their success last year was QB Dennard Robinson staying healthy and the defense improving by leaps and bounds.  The offense should be able to pick up where they left off, but they have some holes on D.  Mainly in their run defense.  If they can shore that up they have a chance to have a really good year.

2.  Michigan State Spartans (10-2, 6-2)
Another team that is lost in all the Michigan/Ohio State love fest is Michigan State.  Even though Michigan State has beaten the Wolverines the past four years.  The Spartans strong suit is their defense which is the best in the Big 10 and rivals most top SEC teams.  They have talent at all three levels.  On offense their running game is top notch.  However they are breaking in a brand new QB in Andrew Maxwell.  He is the key to their season.  If he can be more than a game manager, then the Spartans have as good of a shot to win the conference as anybody.

2.  Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-3, 5-3)
In the past couple of years the Huskers have gone into the season with a strong defense and question marks about their offense.  This year it's opposite.  Their offense is the sure thing.  QB Taylor Martinez is in his 3rd year as a starter and they have impact players in WR Kenny Bell and RB Rex Burkhead.  Their defense on the other hand has some good starters back, but are lacking that star they've had lately.  If the Huskers can win two out of three from Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan they have a shot to make the Big 10 Title Game.  But that is asking a lot.

4.  Iowa Hawkeyes (7-5, 4-4)
If you have any RB experience and some college eligibility left, you could be the Hawkeyes starting RB.  Seriously, their RB situation is that bad.  And this is surprising since the Hawkeyes are such a run oriented team.  With that said they did bring in Greg Davis (former Texas OC) in to run their offense.  Davis ran a lot of spread while at Texas and that could help since they don't have much depth (or talent at RB).  Defensively they'll always be stout, but have a lot to replace along the defensive line.  Iowa will be tough to play this year, but it won't translate into too many wins.

4.  Northwestern Wildcats (7-5, 4-4)
It's quite remarkable the success Northwestern has had in football despite the academic requirements the school has.  Northwestern fields a very solid team every year and this year should be no different.  QB Kain Colter moves from a slash role into the full time starting QB spot and WR Kyle Prater (USC transfer) was ruled eligible to play this season will be Northwestern's main offense.  Prater gives the Wildcats a legit #1 receiver and might be the best receiver the program has every seen.  This will be big because they only return 10 of 22 starters on the team and need any experience they can get.

6.  Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-8, 2-6)
The season fell apart last year in the 2nd game when new HC Jerry Kill collapsed on the sideline with a seizure.  That situation really affected the team and took a toll on them for the next several weeks and costing them at least 2 wins.  This year Kill seems to have his healthy in check and the Gophers are looking to get the program on the right track.  Luckily for them they have some talent on the roster that will make opponents nervous.  Mainly QB MarQueis Gray.  The 6'4 245lb QB is a dual threat and a good one at that.  They'll focus the offense around him and look for play makers to develop around him.  This season will be a tough one again, but there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel.

SEC Season Preview

West
1.  LSU Tigers (12-0, 8-0)
Don't let the dismissal of Tyrann Mathieu fool you.  The Tigers will be alright.  They are still loaded on defense.  The real key to their success will be the play of QB Zach Mettenburger.  If he can jump start this offense then the Tigers will be a favorite to make it back to the National Title game.  If not, it could be another season of relying on defense to win games.

2.  Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1, 7-1)
Not too often do you hav the defending National Champion not favored to win their own division.  But it's not really a knock on the Crimson Tide, mainly because of all the talent they lost on the defensive side of the ball.  However the Crimson Tide offense should be much better mainly because of the experience of QB AJ McCarron.  He continued development from game manager to playmaker will allow the Tide to be a contender once again.
3.  Arkansas Razorbacks (9-3, 5-3)
If it wasn't for HC Bobby Petrino losing his mind and getting fired, I'd be half tempted to put the Razorbacks at the #2 spot in this division.  They return stud QB Tyler Wilson and get back Knile Davis on offense and the defense continues to improve.  However Petrino's absence and the presence of John L. Smith is going to cost them a win at some point.

4.  Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-6, 2-6)
Two years ago it looked like Mississippi State was an up and comer in the league.  However last year the Bulldogs just couldn't win the big one when they had a shot.  This year their toss up games are at home but they just lack the fire power to really take over.  Looks like another average year.

4.  Texas A&M Aggies (6-6, 2-6)
A&M has always been an underachiever in the Big 12, so their addition to the SEC doesn't look like it will lead to a lot of success.  Not only are they joining a new conference, but they are doing so with a new coaching staff.  Kevin Sumlin takes over and brings his air raid spread offense to the SEC.  We'll quickly find out if his system is that good, or just feasted off undermanded Conference USA defenses.

6.  Auburn Tigers (5-7, 2-6)
Oh how things have changed for Auburn since winning the National Title two years ago.  This past off season the Tigers had to replace both coordinators.  Ted Roof left to Penn State, but that was probably a mutual decision.  But the big loss is OC Gus Malzahn and his spread it out attack.  Chizik replaced him with Scott Loeffler who was Temple's OC last year.  Loeffler also brings a pro style attack to Auburn which is a pretty drastic change from Malzahn.  With all the changes and the lack of true playmakers this will be another long season for the Tigers who will be fighting just to become bowl eligible.

7.  Mississippi Rebels (4-8, 1-7)
Another year another basement finish projected for the Rebels.  This year they'll be trying to break out under new head coach Hugh Freeze.  Freeze returns (former assistant coach) to the Rebels after a successful season as the HC at Arkansas State.  It's going to be a tough one for Freeze, but the schedule isn't overly brutal and they get to host A&M and Miss State.  But if they make it to a bowl game, it's a big success.

East
1.  South Carolina Gamecocks (10-2, 7-1)
RB Marcus Lattimore returning from a knee injury is huge for the Gamecocks.  While he was out last year the offense became to one demensinal and QB Connor Shaw struggled at times.  Now Lattimore can help keep defenses honest and help the offense return to more of a balance attack.  Defensively South Carolina lost a ton of talent, but they've done a great job of stock pilling players so there shouldn't be too big of a drop off.  Expect a big year from Jadeveon Clowney.

2.  Georgia Bulldogs (10-2, 6-2)
I really want to put the Bulldogs up at the top of the East, but their lack of a running game makes me hesitant.  Otherwise they have it all.  Good experienced QB, talent at the skill positions, and an elite defense. Their defense is especially good with Jarvis Jones rushing the passer and creating havor.  But the key to their season will be developing a running game.  If not, it's likely a 2nd place finish here.

3.  Florida Gators (8-4, 5-3)
Is this going to be the year where all their raw talent comes together and we see Florida contending for an SEC Championship?  Or will we see another average year with losses to teams that they normally beat?  I'm leaning somewhere in the middle.  I don't see them becoming beating out Georgia or South Carolina, but they are much better than the Missouri's and Vanderbilt's.

4.  Vanderbilt Commodores (7-5, 4-4)
Vanderbilt is one of my surprise teams.  Sure they won't go out and win the conference, but they will play much better than they did in previous years.  A big reason is their HC James Franklin.  Franklin has changed the culture at Vanderbilt and has a lot of positive energy around the program.  No longer are teams looking forward to playing the Commodores.

5.  Missouri Tigers (6-6, 3-5)
It's understandable why Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC.  Money and security.  But their football program will suffer because of it.  The Tigers were a constant threat to win the Big 12 North, but that was one weak division.  Even at their top success, they never won the conference.  Now they go into an even tougher conference and have to face off against elite defenses week in and week out.  Good luck Missouri, because your going to need it this year.

5.  Tennessee Volunteers (6-6, 3-5)
When your head coach is a the top of almost every hot seat article, you know your probably not in for a good year.  Things were looking good.  Tennessee returned starting QB Tyler Bray and had two top notch receivers for him to throw to.  But then Da'Rick Rodgers got booted from the team and took one of their only playmakers away.  But you  have to admire the guy for making tough decisions like that in a year he may lose his job.

7.  Kentucky Wildcats (4-8, 1-7)
It's a good thing Kentucky won the National Championship in basketball because that will take the sting away from Wildcat football.   That's if most Kentucky fans actually follow the football team.  All kidding aside it's going to be a long year.  They have to replace 11 of their 22 starters.  HC Joker Phillips will have to do his best coaching job if he wants a shot at his 5th season.

Pre-season Top 25

1.  USC Trojans
It's been quite a while since we've seen USC at the top of the rankings.  But through the hard work of Lane Kiffin and the return of star players TJ McDonald and Matt Barkley, the Trojans are poised to make a run at another National Title.  On offense they are loaded.  Matt Barkley is a stud and will probably be the top QB taken in the 2013 NFL Draft.  He has Robert Woods and Marqise Lee at WR who might be the two best WRs in college football.  Then add in RB Silas Redd (Penn State) and Curtis McNeal the offense will be extremely tough to stop.  The real key will be the defense.  In a offensive minded conference they'll have to stop teams to beat them.  Mainly Oregon who they'll have to beat twice to put themselves in a position to play for a National Title.

2.  LSU Tigers
Don't let the talk of Tyrann Mathieu being kicked off the team make you think they aren't a favorite for the National Championship.  Mathieu was a great player, but LSU is so loaded with talent that they will be able to recover from his loss.  Aside from the Mathieu talk, the biggest story has been QB Zach Mettenberger.  The former Georgia Bulldog has a cannon for an arm and the Tigers are hoping his passing ability will keep defenses from loading up the box and freeing up their running game.  If LSU can get a more explosive offense, they should be right back to the Title Game.

3.  Alabama Crimson Tide
Ever since Nick Saban has taken over the Crimson Tide program, they've been a major player in college football.  This year should be much the same.  They've always been known for their top notch defense, however losing 6 starters to the NFL including 3 from the secondary they won't have the same bite.  Good thing that the offense should be able to pick up the slack and carry the team for most of the year.  QB AJ McCarron is coming into his own and the running game should be fine behind the best offensive line in college football.  Their big test will be on Nov 3 when they travel to LSU.  The winner of that game could likely decide the SEC and which team goes to the National Title Game.

4.  Oregon Ducks
Despite losing QB Darron Thomas and RB LeMichael James, the Ducks are right back into the thick of the National Championship hunt.  Bryan Bennett will get the nod at QB and many thought he out played Thomas last year.  Losing James is big, but the Ducks still have Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas to carry the load.  Add in stud WR Josh Huff and the offense will continue to run at a high octane.  But the true story of this team will be their defense.  They return 6 starters, but many are considering this to be Chip Kelly's best defense.  But the biggest path to their success could be their schedule.  They have a weak non-conference slate (Arkansas State, Fresno State, and Tennessee Tech) and the last time they played this easy of a non-conference schedule they were in the National Title Game.

5.  Michigan Wolverines
Michigan's success last season was one of the biggest stories in college football.  Brady Hoke turned around this program that was underachieving under Rich Rodriguez.  The biggest reason was the play of their defense.  This year they return 7 starters on a group that DC Greg Mattison has running on all cylinders.  But as we've seen in previous years, the team goes as Dennard Robinson goes.  If he plays like he did last year, the Wolverines will be the Big 10 favorites.  But if he can't stay healthy and goes back to throwing interceptions, the offense will struggle.

6.  Oklahoma Sooners
It's pretty telling how good your program is when a 10-3 season is considered to be a downer.  But things should improve for the Sooners who return 15 fo their 22 starters and key platyers all over the field.  On offense they get back 4 year starter Landry Jones at QB, WR Kenny Stills, and RB Domminque Whaley.  But we all know that the Sooners are a defensive team and their loaded again.  Oklahoma might have one fo the best secondaries in the nation and that comes in very handy in the pass happy Big 12.

7.  Georgia Bulldogs
After being on the hot seat for the better part of the past several years, HC Mark Richt could have his best team yet.  The strength of this team in their defense.  Jarvis Jones is the leader of the defense and is a dominant threat on the outside rushing the passer. Georgia is also deep along the defensive line and will make it tough for opposing defenses to run the ball on them.  On offense QB Aaron Murray returns for his 3rd year as a starter and should continue his development.  The only thing holding this offense back is a running game.  If they can find somebody to step up in replacement of Isaiah Crowell they could really take off.

8.  South Carolina Gamecocks
Last year the Gamecocks went 10-2 and did so without starting QB Stephon Garcia (kicked off) or RB Marcus Lattimore (injury).  Their offense struggled at times with Connor Shaw at QB, but as the season progressed, so did he.  This year they get Lattimore back which should help the offense, but they also lose WR Alshon Jeffery who was a big part of their passing game.  But the biggest losses will be on defense.  They'll have to replace most of their secondary and top pass rusher in Melvin Ingram.  But this does mean that super sophomore Jadeveon Clowney will get more time.  It also doesn't help that they added LSU back to schedule.  But there is still a lot of talent there and the Gamecocks will battle Georgia for the SEC West crown.

9.  Wisconsin Badgers
You would think after being the back to back Big 10 Champions, more people would be talking about Wiscosin.  Instead the Big 10 teams we are hearing about are Michigan and Ohio State.  Part of that might be the fact that Russell Wilson has left and practically their entire coaching staff.  But the Wisconsin program has a system in place that should allow them to keep the momentum rolling. Wilson may be gone, but they secured another transfer in Danny O'Brien (Maryland) who gives them 17 starts under his belt.  This should help, but we all know that this is RB Monte Ball's offense and he'll get the ball even more than last year.  Add in that Wisconsin has an easy road to the Big 10 Title Game (Ohio State and Penn State ineligble) makes them a team to watch out for.

10.  Clemson Tigers
After a breakout year that got Clemson to their first BCS game, the Tigers are looking to build off their success and take it to another level.  They should be pretty well set on offense with Taj Boyd, Sammie Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, and Andre Ellington all back.  This also gives the Tigers another year in OC Chad Morris' offense which should only make them better.  But the big story is their defense.  They were so embarrassed by the thrashing that West Virginia gave them that they fired DC Kevin Steele and replaced him with one of the top DCs in the game in Brent Venables (Oklahoma DC).  If Venables can improve the defense, this team has the firepower and talent to make some serious noise.

11.  Arkansas Razorbacks
Poor Arkansas.  For the past couple of years they've been the 3rd best team in the SEC, however they happen to be in the same division as the two best teams.  However Arkansas gets both LSU and Alabama at home this year.  No better of a time to make a move to the top of the conference.  Things looked to be optimistic for them, they returned stud QB Tyler Wilson and get back RB Knile Davis.  The defensive was continuing to get better and the two paired together was ready to break through to the top.  But then HC Bobby Petrino's off the field behaviors got him fired and the school tabbed crazy John L Smith to be the interm coach.  Smith is fimilar with the program (special teams coach last year) but he has a history of doing some odd things.  If he can stay out of the way, the Razorbacks could be very good.  If not, they could struggle with no real future leader in place.

12.  Virginia Tech Hokies
Always a favorite in the ACC and a darkhorse National Championship candidate, this year is no different for the Hokies.  Their lead by Heisman Trophy candidate Logan Thomas at QB who really emerged as the end of last season and is looking to continue the upward swing.  They'll need to count on Thomas even more without the services of speedy RB David Wilson.  But VaTech is known for having great RBs and they're hoping rFr Michael Holmes is that next good back.  But with all that said, VaTech has been built off defense and speical teams and we know those will be good again.  Their big key is getting past Clemson who they have to go on the road to play this year.

13.  Michigan State Spartans
I really want to have Michigan State higher here.  They easily have the best defense in the Big 10 and have a really good running game.  They have two of the best cornerbacks in the nation and maybe the most feared pass rusher in William Gholston.  But the thing holding them back from being ranked higher is questions about their QB and WR positions.  The biggest one is replacing Kurt Cousins at QB.  Andrew Maxwell will get the nod at QB, but if they want to make it back to a 2nd straight Big 10 Title game they'll need him to be more than just a game manager.

14.  Ohio State Buckeyes
There sure has been a lot of buzz Ohio State this off season.  Sure Urban Meyer has taken over, but this is still a team coming off a 7-6 season and can't participate in any post season games.  Meyer has brought his high intensity and spread to the Horshoe and that has really got people excited.  But this offense is still sketchy in certain areas.  Mainly the skill positions.  DaVier Posey is gone, so is Dan Herron.  Meyer kicked TE Jake Stoneburner off the team and he was their only returning threat.  But they do have QB Braxton Miller whose speed and quickness should fit into the offense well.  But the Buckeyes are going to need to rely on their defense to win a majority of their games.

15.  Texas Longhorns
Despite having some of the best talent in all of college football, the Texas Longhorns have struggled to play at a high level.  A big part of that has been the QB position.  Despite all the talented QBs that come out of Texas, the Longhorns haven't had somebody come out and take the job over.  Right now Chase McCoy and David Ash are battling for the job.  If the Longhorns want to go from average team to National Title contender, they need one of those two players to step up and take over.  Because all the other pieces are there.

16.  Kansas State Wildcats
It's safe to say that everybody was surprised with the season that Kansas State had last year.  They were so good that they should have earned a Sugar Bowl invite.  KState is lead by Heisman Trophy contender Colin Klein at QB.  It doesn't always look pretty, but Klein does it all for the Wildcats.  He is a tough runner and at his size (6'5 226) is very tough to bring down and is a better passer than many people think.  He is the heart and sole of their offense and if he's going, they are tough to beat.  On defense they are lead by Aurther Brown who is all over the field making plays.  KState should be good again this year, however they have the dubious honor of traveling to their toughest opponents (Oklahoma, TCU, West Virginia, and Baylor) which will make it hard for them to get back to 10 wins again.

17.  Florida State Seminoles
I guess I don't get it.  For the past couple of years there has been a lot of hype about Florida State in the pre-season.  Last year they got all the way up to #5 before being beat down by Oklahoma and then dropping games to Clemson and even Wake Forrest.  Now this year they are right back into the top 10 in the pre-season polls with nothing to show for it.  Yeah they return a lot of starters, but they have to replace both offensive tackle positions and the team hasn't shown that they are "back" yet.  So I'm taking the wait and see approach.  But don't get me wrong, they'll have a shot to win their division, but they aren't one of the ten best teams in the nation.

18.  West Virginia Mountaineers
Things went pretty well for West Virginia in HC Dana Holgerson's first season.  The Mountaineers finished the season 10-3 with the offense picking up steam throughout the season and it ended with a 70-33 beatdown of Clemson in the Orange Bowl.  In the off-season the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference where they actually fit in pretty well.  Not in location (like TCU), but in style of play.  The Big 12 is known for high flying offenses, and you don't get anymore high flying than Dana Holgerson.  However the biggest different West Virginia will see is the step up in compition.  No longer are they playing the Rutgers and Pittsburghs.  Now they'll be seeing the Oklahoma's and the Texas.  And they'll need every bit of their explosive offenses if they want to contend for a league title in year 1.
19.  Nebraska Cornhuskers
In their first season as members of the Big 10, the Huskers were favorites to win the conference.  However they fell apart at the end of the season and ended up not even making the Big 10 Title Game.  This year there isn't a whole lot of hype around the team, but that may be a good thing.  Bo Pelini's teams have always been known for their defense, but it may be the offense that has to carry the load to start the season.  Offensively they return all their skill position players and if Taylor Martinez can get back to his running ways, it could be very  hard to stop them.  On defense they should be good, but lack the difference makers they've had the previous coupld of years.  The Huskers should be good, but they aren't one of the elite teams in the Big 10.

20.  Florida Gators
Despite all the talent on the roster, the Gatros have struggled under Will Muschamp to gain any consistencey and get back to the program that was a regular contender for the SEC Title.  But things may change this year.  The Gators return 17 starters and 10 of them are on defense.  Best case scenario for the Gators is the young talent has finally developed and another year in the system allows them to challenge for the SEC West Title.  But there is still a lot of inexperience and lack of playmakers on the offense that could really hold this team back.

21.  Stanford Cardinal
In my opinion we will really get to see how good of a coach David Shaw really is.  Sure he had success last year, but he also had an offense that had Andrew Luck at QB, Coby Fleener at TE and David DeCastro and Jonathan Martin along the offensive line.  Those three players will make a lot of coaches look good.  This year they have to break in a new QB and fill some big shoes along the line.  Luckily they still have Stepfan Taylor at RB who can carry the load.  But the strength of this team will be their defense.  Shayne Skov and Chase Thomas as the two headliners of this defense that has a lot of talent.  They'll need the defense because they cannot count on the offense to simply outscore teams like they did at times last year.  Stanford will be solid, but they won't reach the same success they've had recently.

22.  Lousiville Cardinals
In year 3 of the Charlie Strong era, the Cardinals are the favorites to win the Big East and make it back to the BCS since the days of Bobby Petrino.  Unlike Petrino, Strong has built this team on a strong (pun intended) defense.  This year should be even better with 8 returners on that side of the ball.  On offense the Cardinals return promising QB Teddy Bridgewater who is looking to improve an offense that had to switch play callers mid-season.  Louisville's schedule also stacks up nicely with a weaker non-conference that could allow them to approacth the 10 win mark.

23.  TCU Horned Frogs
For the longest time Non-AQ schools like Utah, Boise State, and TCU have wanted a chance to play with the big boys.  Utah got their chance by joining the Pac 12, now TCU gets their shot by joining the Big 12.  TCU will get to show if they truely belong with the big boys.  However this may not be the best year.  Their defense was ravaged by a drug ring that resulted in key defensive players being kicked off the team, including their returning tackle leader.  But HC Gary Patterson is a defensive guru and will work his butt off to make up for the losses.  Combine that with the continued development of QB Casey Pachal and the Horned Frogs shouldn't be any form of a push over.

24.  FIU Golden Panthers
It's not too often we see Sun Belt Conference teams in the pre-season rankings, but this FIU team isn't your standard Sun Belt team.  The Panthers return 17 of 22 starters on a team that won 8 games last year.  10 of those starters are defensive players.  FIU should roll through an improved Sun Belt, but will be put to the test against #22 Louisville (who they beat last year) and Central Florida.  If they can beat both of those teams it isn't out of the question for them to go undefeated.  But no matter what, FIU is one of the top 25 teams in the nation.

25.  Boise State Broncos
I believe we will finally get to see how good of a program Boise State really is.  The Broncos lose a lot of big time players including 4 year starter Kellen Moore.  HC Chris Peterson will have to break in a new QB and still have the Broncos playing at a high level.  Luckily the Mountain West isn't the same conference anymore without BYU, TCU, and Utah.  Boise State still has more talent on their roster than their conference opponents and should still be a contender for 9 or 10 wins.  But they won't be a darkhorse favorite for the National Title like they have in past years.

Heisman Watch Season Preview

Monte Ball RB Wisconsin
2011 Stats:  275 carries for 1,759 yards 33 TDs, 6 receiving TDs
Why he might win:  Monte Ball was a finalist for the award last year and returns this year as one of the favorites to win the award.  Last year he was a TD machine with 39 totals scores.  He also had to do with with the dynamic Russell Wilson flinging the ball around.  This year Wilson is gone and the Badgers could go back to running the ball even more.  That only helps out Ball who could increase those numbers.  However if Ball has any lingering affects from a concussion suffered in a fight, he could miss some time.

Matt Barkley QB USC
2011 Stats: 3528 yards passing 39 TDs
Why he might win:  After a stellar junior season where Matt Barkley threw for over 3,528 yards with a 69% completion percentage and 39 TDs, he could have easily gone pro and battled it out with RG3 to be the 2nd QB taken in the NFL Draft.  However he decided to return with the goal of helping USC win another National Title.  Word is also getting around that Head Coach Lane Kiffin also told Barkley that if he came back he'd help him win a Heisman Trophy.  That tells me that USC will be looking to throw the ball more often and with two good receivers in Robert Woods and Marqise Lee he should have no trouble improving on his great numbers from last year.  An added bonus is that the Trojans are eligible for post season play now and an added Pac 12 Title game will only help him showcase his talents more.

Rex Burkhead RB Nebraska
2011 Stats: 284 carries for 1,357 yards 15 TDs
Why he might win:  Burkhead might now have the best stats of anybody on this list, but he might be the most important player to his teams success.  Nebraska leans on Burkhead when they need him the most and even when opposing teams know that he is going to get the ball he is still able to get the job done.  Last year against Ohio State he was huge in the 2nd half comeback that allowed the Huskers to get their biggest win of the season.  He did both by rushing and receiving.  Heck Nebraska also doesn't hesitate to put him at QB in their Wildcat package where he ekes out the tough yards.   Burkhead might be a long shot this year, but Nebraska has a favorable schedule and if they are rolling it will be because of this man.

Zach Metteberger QB LSU
2011 Stats:  92 yards 1 TD
Why he might win:  Not to many  people throw for less than 100 yards and only 1 TD and then end up as one of the players to watch for the Heisman Trophy.  Well that's true, but most of those players aren't playing for powerhouse LSU who is one of the favorites for the National Title.  Metteberger (transfer from Georgia) steps into the starting role after the disaster that was Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee.  Unlike the previous starters, Metteberger has a cannon for an arm and is a true pocket passer.  He wow'd everybody at the LSU spring game with his arm and the anticipation for this season is palpable.  LSU will be in the National Title hunt and if Metteberger can get the ball to all the talented players LSU has at the skills positions he might find himself with a front row seat in New York for the trophy presentation.

Aaron Murray QB Georgia
2011 Stats: 3149 yards 35 TDs
Why he might win:  Ever since Mark Richt has become the head coach at Georgia the Bulldogs have always had talent at the QB position.  Murray had big shoes to fill in Matt Stafford, but he has done a great job of getting better each year.  He didn't put up eye popping numbers last year, but he may be asked to carry more of a load this year due to the absence of a strong running game (Isaiah Crowell dismissed).  This may lead the Georgia airing it out more and increasing the stats and exposure for Murray.  Add in that Georgia is the favorite to win the SEC East and he'll have a chance to show off his talent in the SEC Title game.  Let's also not forget that a SEC player has one the Heisman Trophy 3 out of the last 5 years.   A strong season from him and his team could make him the next.

Dennard Robinson QB Michigan
2011 Stats: 2173 yards passing 20 TDs, 1176 rushing 16 TDs
Why he might win:  Robinson might be the most explosive player in college football.  He is a threat to score a TD every time he touches the ball.  Also helps that he touches it every play playing QB.  He ran for over 1,000 yards last year and scored 16 times.  But the biggest improvement was his passing.  He gets knocked for being a bad passer, but he isn't has horrible as people make him out to be.  If he can limit his interceptions (15 last year) his stats will only get better.  Michigan is the favorite to win the Big 10 this year and a big season and a Big 10 Championship will make it hard for voters to ignore him.

De'Anthony Thomas RB Oregon
2011 Stats: 595 7 TDs 605 9 TDs
Why he might win:  It wasn't till half way through the year, but once Oregon found a role for Thomas he really exposed and the Ducks offense which was good, became lethal.  Thomas was a threat to take it to the house every time he touched the ball, and Oregon knew it.  In a way to get him on the field they lined him up all over.  Whether it was in the backfield as a traditional RB, either in motion from the outside, or as a receiver.  He combined for 15 TDs and over 1,000 total yards.  What helps Thomas case this year is the fact that Oregon will be without QB Darron Thomas or RB LeMichael James.  This leaves Thomas and Kenjon Barner as the only two established stars on the team.  This should only increase Thomas impact and allow him to make an even further mark on the college lascape.

Logan Thomas QB Virginia Tech
2011 Stats: 3,013 yards passing 19 TDs, 469 rushing 11 TDs
Why he might win:  While Logan Thomas didn't start off the season very strong, he really picked up steam at the end of the year.  Thomas ended the season with respectable stats, but there is plenty of optimism for him this season.  If he continues to develop as a passer he could become the 2nd coming of Cam Newton who can beat you with a strong arm and as a powerful runner.  Add in that VaTech plays in the water downed ACC and it isn't too big of a stretch for them to finish as one of the best teams in the Nation.

Tyler Wilson QB Arkansas
2011 Stats: 3,638 yards 24 TDs
Why he might win:  Everything was set up for Wilson to have a huge year.  Sure he was without his top three wide receivers, but there was still a ton of talent on the roster and in Bobby Petrino's offense Wilson would get his chance to wing the ball around the field.  However with Petrino having his off the field issues which cost him his job, it also could hurt Wilson's chances of a huge season.  Sure they have Bobby's brother Paul running the offense, but it won't be the same.  Also don't forget RB Knile Davis is returning which should take some of stardom away him him.

Robert Woods WR USC
2011 Stats: 1292 yards 15 TDs
Why he might win:  A Wide Receiver hasn't won the award since Tim Brown did it back in 1987.  And we all know that this is a QB's award.  However if anybody is going to break that streak it could be Woods.  He is clearly the top WR in the nation and has one of the best QB's throwing him the ball.  Early last year he was the only offense USC had and Barkley threw the ball to him almost every time.  However, this year will be different.  Marqise Lee has emerged and don't forget about Silas Redd joining the Trojans.  It will be very hard, but it's not impossible.
